Political freedoms are extended only to close friends and relatives of the leaders of the region's governments. The economy of the region is remarkably unremarkable, with members being neither powerhouses nor basket cases. The median tax rate of the region is 34%, but is frequently higher for the wealthy. The economies of nations in the region tend to be weighted more towards the public sector, with on average only 44% of the economy comprising the private sector.
