The Commonwealth of Caribbean Virgin Islands is a republic consisting of several islands in the “Madeiral Arquipelago”. It is considered to be one of the most prosperous country (or countries) of the Caribbean.
Its history starts in 1661 when the island of Madeiral claimed independency from the Portuguese crown. Later, several neighboring islands declared independency in a chain reaction, causing the 1680 war of total independence against the British and Portuguese Crowns, lasting until 1700.
The new Republic was installed in the former British colony “Emerald Island” with a Westminster system government. The Parliament was held inside Fort Elizabeth until 1899 when sea levels rose to a level that almost engulfed the Emerald Island shorelines. Following a much needed political reform late in that year, the Parliament was temporarily moved to the Mansion of former Governor of Madeiral and enterpreneur Paulo Sérgio dos Santinhos, meanwhile construction of a new Parliament started until its completion in 1900, in Porto Livre.
The Commonwealth consists of the following islands: Madeiral, Emerald Island, Cockney, Paulsand, Ilha das Trutas, Passarão and Sandman Bay.
