In the Bundestag the party has 64 out of 630 seats after polling 8.6% of the vote in the 2013 federal elections and, after the Socialist Unity and Labour parties formed a coalition government, it became the leader of the opposition. Its parliamentary group is the second largest among the four groups in the Bundestag, ahead of the Social Democrats.

According to official party figures, the Party had 145,000 registered members as of December 2015, making it the third-largest party in Tarper.
