NSWiki:Disambiguation

Jump to: navigation, search

Disambiguation in NSwiki is the process of resolving the conflict that occurs when articles about two or more different topics have the same natural title.

NSwiki thrives on the fact that making links is simple and automatic: as you're typing in an edit window, put brackets around Mercury (like this: [[Mercury]]) and you'll have a link. But were you intending to link to Mercury the region, the planet, the nation, or the Roman god?

In NSwiki, our primary activity is chronicling the world of NationStates. Therefore, NSwiki policy is that "official" NS names take precedence. In cases where a name is shared by a Region and a Nation, they will be decided on a case-by-case basis - however, in most cases, the Region will get the "official" NSwiki page, and the Nation will be renamed pagename (nation).

The primary pagename should include a disambiguation notice pointing to pagename (disambiguation). This disambiguation page will provide a place for all claimants to differentiate between and link to their variant names.

To add a disambiguation notice (like the one below) to a page, insert {{disambig}} at the top of the page. Having saved your edits, click the link to the disambiguation page and edit in the other choices.

This is a disambiguation page, i.e., a navigational aid which lists other pages that might otherwise share the same title. Other articles which may share reference to this title may be found at Disambiguation (disambiguation).

If an article link referred you here, you might want to go back and fix it to point directly to the intended page.
