Lavinium

Lavinium is an historic region of NationStates. Founded by Telidia early in NS history, it thrived on a strong democratic tradition. The powerful Lavinium Senate stood at the heart of the region and the many colorful and eventful interactions between the region's member states, which included several longstanding members of the United Nations Old Guard and other noted international institutions. Strong support for and active participation in the UN/WA was another regional tradition; the WA Delegate was considered a very influential official in Lavinian politics. Late in the region's history, however, there were fractious disputes over Senate procedure, and the absence and inactivity of the Founder created logistical problems. Several members splintered off to form the region of Catena in 2012, but it only lasted a couple years. Lavinium was refounded in 2014 after raider troubles left the old region, at the time lacking both a delegate and an active founder, vandalized beyond repair.

Statistics

Lavinium is a minuscule region, inhabited by a few solitary nations.

In Lavinium, denizens enjoy their civil rights, although not too much, or too freely. Nations in the region are considered developing democracies, with some political freedoms afforded to denizens. The economy of the region is very strong, with a large number of very powerful trading powers. Inhabitants rarely are visited by the tax collector, and the region boasts a paltry median tax rate of 6%. The economies of nations in the region tend to be dominated by the private sector, with on average only 5% of the economy comprising the public sector. Commerce is a major priority of national governments within the region, most of whom are trading nations, as is evidenced by the fact that commerce budgets account for an average of 25% of public expenditure in the region.

Denizens of the Lavinium are poorly educated, with rampant illiteracy. Crime is low: the region enjoys well-equipped and well-funded police forces, coupled with efficient but fair judicial systems. Defense is an overarching priority for governments within the region. One might suggest they are compensating for something. Due to the lack of any Public transport, streets are packed with cars, bikes, and assorted noisy vehicles.

Governments in Lavinium communicate very well amongst themselves, with administration departments working smoothly, with 4% on average of government budgets being devoted to Administration. Hospital patients are given credit checks upon passing through emergency rooms, as no government provision is made for healthcare in the region. No welfare is provided in the region. Those unlucky enough to fall into unemployment are forgotten and abandoned. Governments within the region are fixated with religious worship, with nations having an inordinately high average of 12% of total government funds devoted to it.

In Lavinium, Social inequality is total, with wealth being held by a tiny fraction of the region's populace. The landscapes of the region are no longer recognizable as such, the atmosphere being unbreathable and the only jungles being made of concrete.
