Kennan

Kennan is a medium-sized region, with a thriving community of 27 nations and only 10 World Assembly Members.

In Kennan, denizens enjoy their civil rights, although not too much, or too freely. Nations in the region are healthy democracies, with denizens being afforded an extensive array of political freedoms. Families in the region are so obsessed with the economy that the discussion of laffer curves and supply-side reforms over dinner is a regular occurrence in member nations. Inhabitants of the region ultimately pay most of their earnings to the government, as the median tax rate is 76%, or more! The economies of nations in the region tend to be heavily weighted towards the public sector, with on average only 26% of the economy comprising the private sector. Stoking commercial activity is a major priority for governments, accounting for an average of 10% of public expenditure.

Education is a priority for governments throughout Kennan, with ample funding being provided and teachers enjoying a great deal of support. Crime is low: the region enjoys well-equipped and well-funded police forces, coupled with efficient but fair judicial systems. Defense is a major priority for governments within the region, with a large chunk of government budgets being devoted to it. Public transport is a popular mode of transport in the region, receiving on average of 5% of total government budgets.

Governments in Kennan communicate very well amongst themselves, with administration departments working smoothly, with 7% on average of government budgets being devoted to Administration. Governments generally endow their healthcare departments with a large amount of funding, with an average of 8% of government budgets across the region being devoted to healthcare. Welfare in the region is minimal, with only a small amount of expenditure being devoted to spending on social security. Governments in the region are avowedly atheist - no public funds are allocated to spirituality.

Social inequality is a major problem within Kennan, although some effort has been made to correct the problem. The region's landscapes are reasonably good, although the impact of the denizens has had a noticeable effect.

History

OOC Founding

The region of Kennan was founded on October 3rd, 2012 by Samukan. The region first started off with four nations, being Samukan, Ethan Foley, United Solcialist States of Jakeopia, and PRW. However, soon, on October 4th, a 5th nation, the Sandwich Territories joined, along with the Hackleberry Islands, the 6th member of Kennan (who joined on October 5th). To this day, the region maintains a stable population of among 30 members located across the world.

(All articles will be "In-Context" from this point forward;)

The Great War of Kennan

Prologue

The region as an identifier and geological area began with the Great War of Kennan. This conflict was sparked by the rising tensions between the Kennan Union (KU), which consisted of Ethan Foley and the People's Republic of Wilder PRW, and the Western Kennan Alliance (WKA), which consisted of Samukan and United Solcialist States of Jakeopia. The Kennan Union, established in 1997, had multiple ideological differences with the Western Kennan Alliance, one of these being the support of autocracy and militarism in the KU, and the support of democracy and liberty in the WKA. Samukan and TMEF (Ethan Foley) had also been known for quietly harboring discontent between each other.

First Attacks

On October 4th, 2001, at approximately 6:38 P.M. Local Time, the Kennan Union declared war on the Western Kennan Alliance. Samukan responded quickly against TMEF (Ethan Foley), and President Alkotrozz of Samukan launched a naval attack on TMEF, beginning the first battle of the war. At the same moment, the USSJ (United Socialist States of Jakeopia) began to gather intelligence on the state of PRW's affairs, not explicitly attacking. The many battles of the Great War of Kennan would often form similar to this bracket, with battles being primarily between TMEF/Samukan, and USSJ/PRW.

Sandwichian Blockade

As the conflict wore on, the Sandwich Territories, a neutral nation, was blockaded by TMEF in order to force them into joining the KU. The Sandwich Territories refused to make a decision until certain quotas were met - Including the breakup of the blockade. Eventually, the nation ended up joining the KU late into the war. However, the nation still remained neutral in actual combat, and remained unhostile towards the WKA.

Jakeopian Attacks on PRW

In January of 2002, the USSJ began an invasion of PRW. Due to the secrecy of these missions and attacks, not much information is known about the invasion. Presumably, these missions failed to completely overtake PRW. Multiple intelligence agencies across Kennan state that while no actual damage to PRW's government occurred, the Jakeopian soldiers began to massacre thousands of soldiers at PRW's military outposts nearby the border between the two nations. While PRW initially initiated defenses, reports on the subject suddenly and quietly ceased from both governments. As a result, the incident remains an urban legend to what eventually happened to the Jakeopian soldiers.

The Sandwich Territories & Hackleberry Islands V.S. PRW

During these sieges, it was noted that Dictator Wilder of PRW was becoming increasingly erratic, and beginning to defy the orders of the KU. Soldiers reported that he would either give soldiers very vague orders, or commands that did not make logistical sense. If the soldiers disobeyed, they would be bombed on sight, regardless if they were near a civilian zone, or if they were even inside PRW's borders. Wilder became increasingly angered with the refusal of the Sandwich Territories to join the KU, and also began to focus his sights on the Hackleberry Islands. Messengers and generals would report that Wilder would become angered to the point of "...physical violence or spontaneous orders of execution of his generals if they reported bad news or if they questioned his orders...". For unknown reasons, and against the orders of TMEF, Wilder began to threaten both neutral nations and attempt to coerce them into joining the KU. Both declined, and Wilder ordered his forces to attack without provocation, supposedly saying,

"They've made a fool of me! Those f*ckers think that they're better than me?! They think that they can just laugh at my power?! I want every single man, woman, and child of the Sandwich Territories and Hackleberry Islands slaughtered mercilessly!"

HASO Intelligence of the Hackleberry Islands spotted 48 ships of different classes entering Hackleberry and Sandwichian waters, one group of 18 headed for Neptune City (Hacklet capital & largest city), 6 headed for Seabrook (Hacklet city), while the remaining 24 surrounded Port Trádáil (The Sandwichian capital) and Reimsburgh (The largest Sandwichian city). Against Supreme Dictator Ethan Foley's orders, who headed the Kennan Union, on October 13th, Wilder ordered his forces to invade.

Hackleberry

At 2:10 P.M, the first shots were fired on Neptune City. The PRW naval forces began moving toward the shores of the Port District. Citizens began evacuation from the metro area as many buildings were hit with bombs and shells from the PRW battleships. Artillery shells were also fired at major structures before civilians were allowed to evacuate, resulting in multiple collapses. The first fighter jets from the Hackleberry Islands Air Force (HAF) & and ships from the Hackleberry Islands Navy arrived at 2:17, and began a rapid fire assault on PRW cruisers. Neptune City began evacuation, and the Federal District went into lockdown. President Hackett, Vice President Kazarian, and the National Council moved to the Hackleberry Islands Defense Center, and all Senators, Roll House Delegates, and Court Heads were instructed to take shelter in the Senate Chamber's underground bunkers, 600 feet below sea level, and secured by HASO forces.

12 battleships surrounded the PRW forces from the outside, while the Hackleberry armed forces surrounded the Port District from the interior. For six days, both sides remained at a stalemate, sustaining casualties and damage to both the Hackleberry Islands and PRW forces. The violent firefight resulted in massive destruction to the areas of the city nearby the battleships, only the Federal District avoiding damage. The Port District itself sustained great damage, the dockyards used as a battlefield. As much damage as the district received, the majority of the PRW forces never made their way past the shipping ports and coastal neighborhoods.

As the days wore on and the firefight continued, the PRW forces began to destroy the infrastructure of the Port District, cutting power & telephone lines, severing gas & water lines, jamming radio signals on public channels, and stormed multiple ISP buildings, cutting off internet access. And all the while, soldiers began looting houses and attacking civilians ofn the street. Realizing that the residences would be rendered uninhabitable, and rendering thousands homeless as a result, the National Council and the Defense Center had to think of a plan to stop the Port District from being completely destroyed. Deciding to find a fault in the opposing army's defenses, the Hackleberry Airspace Special Operations (HASO) soldiers were pulled from the battlefield. Multiple soldiers were given imitating uniforms of the PRW navy, and were sent to sneak on board each battleship.

The HASOs reported that 10 of the 18 battleships contained very few soldiers, only those necessary to the controlling each ship. It was found in data logs that each ship was formerly filled to capacity, and those on board these "abandoned ships" were the few who were not sent into battle. The National Council soon decided to send in the HASOs to quickly and quietly hijack the abandoned battleships, and use them against the remaining ships that were occupied. The HASOs onboard the 8 fully staffed battleships quickly jumped ship and were picked up by Coast Guard and Red Cross skiffs, who homed in on their positions.

At 10:47 P.M. on October 19th, 200 HASO soldiers left Pembroke Air Force Base via four stealth helicopters. The green light was given for the incognito HASOs onboard the battleships to sever all communications and shut down the power to each ship. For each ship, 20 HASO parajumpers landed on the stern of each ship. A squadron infiltrated each ship, and began moving toward the control deck in teams, taking any PRW soldier encountered into custody if they complied. Those who didn't were shot on the spot. Once the ship was secured, the ship's power was restored, and communications were re-established, this time with the Defense Center, and with every Hackleberry battleship. This cycle of events was repeated until every ship was secured. Over a period of one hour, all 10 of the battleships were now under HASO control. Under direct orders from President David Hackett and Defense Secretary James Cook, the battleships began to move towards the 8 remaining PRW controlled vessels.

Hackleberry battleships were alerted to these ten allied vessels. The 10 occupied vessels would be completely illuminated by red tinted floodlights, whereas the remaining 8 PRW controlled battleships would not be. Suddenly, in a coordinated attack, from the Hackleberry vessels ahead, and the HASO controlled vessels behind, the 8 remaining battleships were quickly outgunned and violently destroyed. By the time PRW command heard about the attack, it was already far too late. The surviving PRW soldiers were taken into custody, and eventually relocated back to their home country, due to the lack of resources and money to hold said prisoners.

Meanwhile, on October 13th, 2003, 40 miles away, nearby Seabrook, 2 of the 6 battleships made landfall at Onset Beach, a national beach reservation. At 3:47 P.M. Wilder ordered his forces to begin making their way inland. Soldiers began establishing a presence at the beach, located 4 miles south from Seabrook city limits. Approximately 7,000 soldiers began storming their way through the A3 motorway towards the city, violently slaughtering any civilians, soldiers, and animals that stood in their way. Thousands of people ran for their lives as the soldiers mercilessly made their way north, staying close to the coastline.

Before making their way to the city center, however, at 5:15 P.M, the Hackleberry Islands Army & Navy arrived, and blockaded the city completely, fighting on said front. Any radio signals on both Hackleberry and PRW military channels were jammed. While this meant the Hackleberry forces could not receive orders, this meant that the PRW forces could not receive orders either. The PRW invasion force continued to follow the final order from Dictator Wilder: Invade Seabrook, or die trying.

At the same time, an alternate division of the HAF arrived on scene and began an attack on the four remaining battleships, who remained 7 miles out at sea. Due to the lack of organization from the jammed radio signals, the PRW forces were caught immediately off guard as PRW's ship Patrick was decimated with a single blow to the bow of the ship, sinking in a matter of minutes. However, the other three battleships began a violent assault on the fighter jets circling them. 38 fighter jets were shot down in total, as well as three bombers. Another one of PRW's ships, Nanigian, sunk due to a weakening of the ship's hull, eventually cracking on the starboard side, close to the stern.

From October 16th to 20th, the army prevented any PRW soldier from entering the city. No civilian deaths were reported during said time period. Around a third of the PRW army perished during this period. The navy also protected the beaches, ports, and boardwalks on Seabrook's coastline. And the air force continued assaulting the battleships off the coast.

On October 20th, with the PRW army sufficiently weakened, the Hackleberry army forces began to slowly push the PRW forces back towards the coast. Over a period of 12 hours, the PRW forces were pushed back to their starting point: Onset Beach. The remaining 4,000 foot soldiers escaped onboard PRW's least damaged battleship, Bafaro. Radio signals resumed, and orders were given to chase the surviving PRW soldiers out to a certain distance, and encircle them.

With the PRW armed forces decimated at Neptune City, the remaining soldiers at Seabrook began to frantically move out to sea. The Seabrook forces began chasing Bafaro out, as Neptune City's remaining forces rushed out to intercept the ship. Bafaro was joined by the four surviving cruisers from the Seabrook campaign. The five PRW cruisers began to fire back at the many Hackleberry battleships following them. While no Seabrook cruisers sank, the PRW Navy was able to do substantial damage to the Seabrook forces. About 33 miles out to sea, the five PRW cruisers were intercepted by Neptune City's battleships. Surrounded, exhausted, and at the mercy of the HAF and Hackleberry Navy, the PRW soldiers surrendered.

These soldiers, much like the forces decimated at Neptune City, were once again shuttled back to their home country due to lack of money and resources to take them as prisoners. Hackleberry forces took control of the five cruisers, and an armistice with PRW was reached. The Sandwich Territories, having gone through a very similar ordeal at the same time, also signed said armistice.
