Kennan is a medium-sized region, with a thriving community of 27 nations and only 10 World Assembly Members.

In Kennan, denizens enjoy their civil rights, although not too much, or too freely. Nations in the region are healthy democracies, with denizens being afforded an extensive array of political freedoms. Families in the region are so obsessed with the economy that the discussion of laffer curves and supply-side reforms over dinner is a regular occurrence in member nations. Inhabitants of the region ultimately pay most of their earnings to the government, as the median tax rate is 76%, or more! The economies of nations in the region tend to be heavily weighted towards the public sector, with on average only 26% of the economy comprising the private sector. Stoking commercial activity is a major priority for governments, accounting for an average of 10% of public expenditure.

Education is a priority for governments throughout Kennan, with ample funding being provided and teachers enjoying a great deal of support. Crime is low: the region enjoys well-equipped and well-funded police forces, coupled with efficient but fair judicial systems. Defense is a major priority for governments within the region, with a large chunk of government budgets being devoted to it. Public transport is a popular mode of transport in the region, receiving on average of 5% of total government budgets.

Governments in Kennan communicate very well amongst themselves, with administration departments working smoothly, with 7% on average of government budgets being devoted to Administration. Governments generally endow their healthcare departments with a large amount of funding, with an average of 8% of government budgets across the region being devoted to healthcare. Welfare in the region is minimal, with only a small amount of expenditure being devoted to spending on social security. Governments in the region are avowedly atheist - no public funds are allocated to spirituality.

Social inequality is a major problem within Kennan, although some effort has been made to correct the problem. The region's landscapes are reasonably good, although the impact of the denizens has had a noticeable effect.

History

OOC Founding

The region of Kennan was founded on October 3rd, 2012 by Samukan. The region first started off with four nations, being Samukan, Ethan Foley, United Solcialist States of Jakeopia, and PRW. However, soon, on October 4th, a 5th nation, the Sandwich Territories joined, along with the Hackleberry Islands, the 6th member of Kennan (who joined on October 5th). To this day, the region maintains a stable population of among 30 members located across the world.

The Great War of Kennan

Prologue

The region as an identifier and geological area began with the Great War of Kennan. This conflict was sparked by the rising tensions between the Kennan Union (KU), which consisted of Ethan Foley (MEF) and the People's Republic of Wilder ( PRW), and the Western Kennan Alliance (WKA), which consisted of Samukan and United Solcialist States of Jakeopia (USSJ). The Kennan Union, established in 1997, had multiple ideological differences with the Western Kennan Alliance, one of these being the support of autocracy and militarism in the KU, and the support of democracy and liberty in the WKA. Samukan and the MEF had also been known for quietly harboring discontent between each other.

First Attacks

On October 4th, 2001, at approximately 6:38 P.M. Local Time, the Kennan Union declared war on the Western Kennan Alliance. Samukan responded quickly against the MEF. President Alkotrozz of Samukan launched a naval attack on the MEF, beginning the first battle of the war. A number of aircraft carriers and battleships made their way to the MEF mainland.

The following day, Jakeopia (USSJ) sent an elite infantry unit to PRW's western border. The elite unit kept watch on PRW's moves. Hours later, President Alkotrozz of Samukan sent a brief message to Jakeopian leadership which read, "The military of Samukan has secured the country's borders. If you need any assistance in the war against the Kennan Union, we are here to help. Just contact us and we'll send what troops we can spare to assist in the fight." These events solidified Jakeopia's and Samukan's commitment to help each other in the war.

The Military of Ethan Foley made their first significant troop movement early in the morning of October 5th. The Supreme Dictator at the time, Ethan Foley XXV was hopeful that sending in enormous numbers of soldiers at once would decimate the morale of Samukan and force them to surrender within days. With that in mind, he ordered 100,000 regular infantry directly into Samukan territory. They were to make their way to the capital quickly destroying any resistance they met along the way. He gave the simple order "engage if provoked".

Also at this time, 100,000 of PRW's infantry were dispatched to Jakeopia. Upon entering Jakeopia, the USSJ's elite infantry unit was spotted and an intense battle occurred. During this attack, Jakeopia's outcome was uncertain. Radio operators on the front lines sent the short message, "We are in the middle of battle. We have sent troops near the border PRW". Little is known about the details of this battle on the PRW-Jakeopia battle. But what is clear through this message is that Jakeopian soldiers were under intense fire and had little time to send any detailed message out.

Sandwichian Blockade

As the conflict wore on, the Sandwich Territories, came under intense pressure. The Military of Ethan Foley sent 96 navy ships of varying classes and blockaded the small island nation. Perhaps only a few thousand elite infantry soldiers actually landed inside the Sandwich Territories. They were given the order to "disable the Sandwich Territories' communications with the outside world at and their trade networks at once." Over the next few hours, radio stations, underground wires, ports, and government buildings were raided and had communication devices disabled. Ships blocked harbors and fired warning shots. Dozens of guard posts were set up in the Sandwich Territories. In the Official Military Report of Ethan Foley, there were no recorded deaths.

The MEF blockaded Sandwich Territories to force them into the Kennan Union. Sandwich Territories initially refused and demanded the blockade be dispersed. The blockade was dispersed, and after several more incidents regarding Kennan Union forces and the Sandwich Territories, the Sandwich Territories joined the Kennan Union, but continued to remain neutral through the duration of the war.

Samukan vs Ethan Foley

Weeks following the start of the Great War of Kennan, the 100,000 MEF infantry that began their march into Samukan territory faced incredible resistance. 150,000 Samukan military were prepared to defend their country against the MEF. Around 2:00 PM Local Time, the MEF army was less than a mile from the Samukanian forces. Samukanian Commander Barkli shouted over a loudspeaker to the MEF soldiers to stop or face hostilities. This prompted the MEF soldiers to stop and await further orders. A commanding general immediately ordered their advance and the 100,000 soldiers erupted in a battle cry.

Word from the frontlines warned the High Command Building at the City of Foley of a massive Samukan force. Supreme Dictator Ethan Foley XXV in response ordered another 100,000 soldiers to the frontlines. They were loaded into transport aircraft, vehicles, and on foot. Most of the reinforcements were expected to arrive on the frontlines within several hours. Jakeopia in turn sent troops to aid Samukan.

Jakeopian Attacks on PRW

In January of 2002, the USSJ began an invasion of PRW. Due to the secrecy of these missions and attacks, not much information is known about the invasion. Presumably, these missions failed to completely overtake PRW. Multiple intelligence agencies across Kennan state that while no actual damage to PRW's government occurred, the Jakeopian soldiers began to massacre thousands of soldiers at PRW's military outposts nearby the border between the two nations. While PRW initially initiated defenses, reports on the subject suddenly and quietly ceased from both governments. As a result, the incident remains an urban legend to what eventually happened to the Jakeopian soldiers.

The Sandwich Territories & Hackleberry Islands vs PRW

During these sieges, it was noted that Dictator Wilder of PRW was becoming increasingly erratic, and beginning to defy the orders of the KU. Soldiers reported that he would either give soldiers very vague orders, or commands that did not make logistical sense. If the soldiers disobeyed, they would be bombed on sight, regardless if they were near a civilian zone, or if they were even inside PRW's borders. Wilder became increasingly angered with the refusal of the Sandwich Territories to join the KU, and also began to focus his sights on the Hackleberry Islands. Messengers and generals would report that Wilder would become angered to the point of "...physical violence or spontaneous orders of execution of his generals if they reported bad news or if they questioned his orders...". For unknown reasons, and against the orders of TMEF, Wilder began to threaten both neutral nations and attempt to coerce them into joining the KU. Both declined, and Wilder ordered his forces to attack without provocation, supposedly saying,

"They've made a fool of me! Those f*ckers think that they're better than me?! They think that they can just laugh at my power?! I want every single man, woman, and child of the Sandwich Territories and Hackleberry Islands slaughtered mercilessly!"

HASO Intelligence of the Hackleberry Islands spotted 48 ships of different classes entering Hackleberry and Sandwichian waters, one group of 18 headed for Neptune City (Hacklet capital & largest city), 6 headed for Seabrook (Hacklet city), while the remaining 24 surrounded Port Trádáil (The Sandwichian capital) and Reimsburgh (The largest Sandwichian city). Against Supreme Dictator Ethan Foley's orders, who headed the Kennan Union, on October 13th, Wilder ordered his forces to invade.
