The Social Democratic Party of Tarper (SDPT), also commonly referred to as the SocDems, is a social democratic political party in Tarper. The party was founded in 2003 as a continuation of the NeoComms, a social democratic party in the former Republic of Tarper.
Since mid-2012, its leader has been Ruben Mann. In the Bundestag the party won 69 out of 709 seats in the 2017 federal elections and, after the SU, GLU, and the LP formed a grand coalition, became junior leader of the opposition. Its parliamentary group is the fifth largest among the seven groups in the Bundestag, ahead of the christian democrats.
According to official party figures, the SDPT had 62,000 registered members as of December 2017, making it the fifth-largest party in Tarper.
The party participates in governments in the states of Astra, as a Senior partner to the CDSF and Österfluss as a Junior partner to the CDSF.

History
The Christmas Coup in the Tarperti confederation which led to the replacement of interim Communist leader Henry Bosch in December 1991 led to a new generation of politicians in the Confederation's ruling Communist Party (CPT) who looked to become an impenetrable opposition to Hinder's National Party. Unfortunately, Hinder had dissolved the confederation and the party was forced into exile and remained underground until 2002.
This forced exile of the CPT caused various caucuses and factions from the communist era to split from the old party and seek official party recognition from the Republican government. In 1996 after years of unlawful petitioning, the government finally allowed free elections. Before this only two parties existed, the National Party, and the Sub-National Party. The factions of the breakout factions of the CPT to create parties were, The Red Brigade, Faction of Liberal Communists, and Caucus for Socialism and Democracy, who came together to create the Republican Union of Anti-Capitalists (RUAC); and the Social Democratic Faction, New Confederation Congress, and Free Labour Federation went to create the Neo Communists of Tarper (NeoComms or NCT), a social democratic party.
The NeoComms had become the third largest party in the Republic after RUAC, who was second, and the National Party, who was first. Near the turn of the century, Mans Hinder had decided to purge the parties due to his concerns over his power diminishing. All parties were outlawed in 1998, with RUAC ending in 1999. The NeoComms were dissolved with most of its members going to RUAC and then the New Millenium Party. After the Second Civil War, several former members of the NCT had left the newly renamed Socialist Unity Party. In 2003 the member reconvened and created the modern SDPT. In the 2005 Federal Election, the party sent its first members to the Bundestag. Since then it has become the 5th biggest party in Tarper.
Structure
Symbols
The SDPT, like most social democratic parties, uses a rose as its symbol. The rose appears in the party flag. Its motto is "Yes, We Can" as a reference for the party's mission to eliminate inequality. The party uses the "Radical March" as its anthem.
