Stefanos Fabius, 36th Duke of Paphlagonia

Stefanos Fabius, 36th Duke of Paphlagonia, etc. KP, PC (4 January 1806 – 25 December 1887), styled Baron Paphlagonia until 1857, was a Diadochian Prásinoi aristocrat and politician, who served in various cabinet positions in the mid-19th century, including that of Mégas Doúkas Náv̱archos.

Early life and education

Paphlagonia was the eldest son of Stefanos Fabius, 35th Duke of Paphlagonia, and Lady Theodora Apokapes, daughter of the Duke of Chalcedon He was baptized on 12 March 1807. He was educated at Odysséa College and Constantine College, Olympias

Political career

Paphlagonia sat as Member of Parliament between (1832-1834) and again between 1836 and 1859. He served as a Chartoularios of the Treasury between 1837 and 1841, as Secretary to the Board of Colonial affairs between 1841 and 1843 and as Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department between July and September 1843. In September 1853 he was appointed minister of Public Works and Transport. In October of the same year he entered the cabinet and was sworn into the Privy Council of Diadochia. He remained Minister of Public Works and Transport until the government fell in March 1854.

Paphlagonia succeeded his father in the dukedom in 1857 and entered the House of Archontes. In 1861, Paphlagonia was appointed Mégas Doúkas Náv̱archos, with a seat in the cabinet. He held this post until 1868.


He was made a Knight of the Panagia in 1864 and in 1865 he was created Earl Fabius.


Family

Paphlagonia and his wife Gregoria had two sons and three daughters:

The Duchess of Paphlagonia died in January 1885. Some survived her by less than a year and died in November 1886, aged 80, and was buried with her. As his two sons had both died in his lifetime, the family titles devolved on his younger brother, Alexios Fabius, 37th Duke of Paphlagonia.
