Ostendorff has had a long and decorated career in the Verteidigungsstaffel, serving in all engagements in the history of Rotgeheim. He especially distinguished himself in leading Army Group B during the Invasion of Scheinfeld.

Ostendorff has been married twice. He had a short-lived marriage with former classmate Sabine Hermann, with whom he had one daughter.
