Acratania, officially The Kingdom of Acratania (Acratanién: Le Royôme d'Acratànie; is an kingdom on the Victorium continent. Acratania is bordered by Austiana to the east, Dawinia to the west, and Auvernia to the north.

Acratania is divided into 9 duchies, which are further divided into a total of 127 counties. The 9 duchies are: Artesmia, Aubernia, Bessinia, Chartesnia, Dumaria, Faurinia, Medesnia, Vallinia and Vautrinia

Its citizens enjoy a high standard of living allowed by a developed mixed economy, of which many aspects are controlled directly or indirectly by the government. Although it was a de facto planned economy during the Civil War, the Kingdom’s private sector grew in strength during the postwar decades; it represents about 60-70% of the national product in the early 2010s. Savam is rapidly closing on nations in terms of technological development.

The first attested use of the name Acratania as a political entity comes from the Latin name for the area, Agrī Tanium, the "lands of the Tani." The origins of the Tani ethnonym is unclear. The early belief was a relation to the Auvernian word tanière, meaning lair, which referred to unique stables used by Tani horsemen. This term, however, did not come into use until after the Latins gave the area the name Agrī Tanium. The modern belief is that the name is in fact an autonym from the Tani language, derived from the word tanam, which simply means "name."

Government

Main article: Politics of Acratania

Acratania is a de facto limited monarchy, which has legal limits placed upon the king despite a lack of a formal constitution. In practice, the king's power is constrained by the General Parliament and the judicial system, though the existence of both is determined by acts of royal law rather than a constitution, and thus could theoretically be retracted by the monarch at any time. As such, the King of Acratania retains significant executive and legislative powers. Acratania's throne, unlike most monarchies, is not passed on by heredity. Since the 17th century, upon the demise of a sitting king, the next king is chosen by the Ducal Council, composed of the leaders of Acratania's nine duchies.

The Privy Council is Acratania's primary executive body. It is headed by the king, who serves as both head of state and head of government in Acratania. It is composed of various appointed officials who manage the various executive departments established by the king. In practice, the chief executive in Acratania is the First Minister of State, who serves as the leader of the Privy Council and handles the day-to-day management of the executive branch based on the direction of the monarch. No approval process exists for the appointment of Privy Council ministers, but tradition dictates that Privy Council ministers be chosen from within the General Parliament due to their experience.

Legislative power rests largely with the king, who can pass and repeal acts of royal law at any time, but a fair amount of legislative authority rests with the General Parliament. The Parliament is a bicameral legislature, composed of the Baronial Council (the upper house) and the National Assembly (the lower house). The Baronial Council is composed of members of the nobility, while the National Assembly is elected every seven years. Since 1919, only members of the National Traditional Party may hold seats in the National Assembly. Baronial Council members are not required to be NTP members, and most choose to not to affiliate themselves with the party.

Administrative Divisions

Acratania is divided into 9 duchies, which are further divided into a total of 127 counties. Each duchy and county is led by a hereditary noble, dukes and counts respectively, though as Acratania is a unitary state, these nobles serve primarily as administrators, and what little authority they do possess is granted to them by national law. The nine dukes do, however, compose the Ducal Council, which holds some important legislative duties.

What little local government happens in Acratania usually happens at the county level. Each county has a small county council, rarely more than twenty members strong, which decide matters of local government, such as zoning and traffic ordinances, which are considered to localized and trivial for national government, though their decisions always follow higher-level guidelines. The county councils also serve as courts which decide minor criminal and civil matters.
