Aldia, officially the United Colonies of Aldia, is an Interplanetary Republic comprised of the home planet Aldia and nine additional colonies in the Aldian System. The Aldian system is located 50 Light Years away from Sol. The humans of Aldia were the descendants of prehistoric humans of Earth, this was supported by the lack of fossil records of modern and ancients humans in Aldia. It has always been speculated that the ancestors of Aldians were taken by an unknown alien species from Earth and resettled on Aldia around 130,000 years ago for unknown reasons. Regardless, these early prehistorical 'Aldians' followed a similar but fast-tracked evolutionary path as their Earthling cousins did. An example was that by the 15th century, Aldians had a technological level equal to that of Earth in the 21st century.

The United Colonies were formed in the aftermath of a decade long interplanetary war in the 17th century between the nations of Aldia various rebel factions that demanded their independence from Aldia. At the time Aldia had one colony world and the war took place on both Aldia and its first colony. The war ended after the rebels were defeated in the Second Battle of the Maginot Line where rebel leaders signed a peace treaty with Aldia. The interplanetary war united the nations of Aldia and reaffirmed Aldia's continued rule over its colonies; past, present and future.

The unified military arm of Aldia is the Colonial Self-Defense Forces (CSDF) and is maintained by a significant military budget. The CSDF is administered by the Department of Offense (DoO) while the President serves as the commander-in-chief of the CSDF. The CSDF is technologically sophisticated and maintains a high number of active personnel, a compulsory 80-day military training regime is in force for all citizens at the age of 18. Due to its distance from Sol and any other nearby governments, Aldia has maintained a policy of isolationism and non-intervention in international affairs although it does have cordial and friendly relations with nations of the Facebook Nations region. Due to its remote location, many refugees across the galaxy has attempted to reach the United Colonies to seek asylum.

Humans comprise a great majority of the Aldian population (amounting up to 65% of the total population) with a fair number of non-humans (35% of the population). As a consequence, humans are also the most politically dominant species in the country. The human population itself is comprised of thousands of other ethnic groups which led to the establishment of the United Colonies's motto "Unity in Diversity". This reflects the nation's ethnic and species diversity.

History

Pre-industrial Aldia

Approximately 130,000 years ago prehistoric humans from Earth were brought to Aldia by unknown extra-terrestrials. For reasons unknown these aliens simply left the humans on Aldia to survive on their own, without any clear objective. Thus they followed the normal evolutionary pathway as the humans of Earth did. At first the humans were only found on the continent of Alda, but they gradually expanded throughout the entire planet. By 120,000BC, humans have colonized the entire planet. Tribal hunter-gatherer societies formed in the early years of settlement until the Neolithic Revolution which allowed humans to use plants to systematically produce edible food-energy. This eventually allowed the development of the complex first city-state societies that frequently warred with each other.

With the capability to produce a stable and reliable amount of food the human population exploded and began to expand beyond its first settlements which allowed them to colonize the entire planet. As these explorer tribes settled new land and continents they established new civilizations as well. A major difference between the humans of Earth and Aldia was that while Earth-humans plunged into the Dark Age, a period of time when technology regressed, the humans of Aldia did not experience a Dark Age. This allowed technological advancements to continue and overtake that of Earthlings. By the 13th century, Aldians experienced the Industrial Revolution. In the 14th century, Aldia entered the atomic age, 15th century; the space age and finally in the 16th century; Aldia became a space-faring civilization.

War of the Three Powers

The War of the Three Powers was a period of total war between three factions of Aldia that took place from November 1439 until September 1444. The War of the Three Powers was the first global conflict that engulfed the planet and resulted in the deaths of 100 million Aldians. The war also marked the first time nuclear weapons were used on a limited scale, with at least five cities being destroyed by a nuclear weapon. The war was a conflict between three warring factions; the democratic Polystralian Commonwealth, the fascist Coalition of Ordered Governments and the communist People's Republic of Sanmite. Each faction fought for ideological reasons, however the real motive behind the conflict was to gain access to new resources.

The Polystralian Commonwealth controlled the largest number of reserves of both renewable and non-renewable resources such as geothermal, oil, gas, timber and many others. Citizens of the Commonwealth also enjoyed higher standards of living compared to the other two factions which created resentment among the other Aldians. This was utilized by the Coalition and the People's Republic to garner support to invade Polystralia. The Coalition and the People's Republic formed an alliance and invaded Polystralia. Intially the Commonwealth was caught off guard by the invasion, however they were able to retake their lands after the People's Republic defected and allied themselves with Polsytralia. Their defection was caused by the revelation that Coalition forces systematically committed genocide of Polystralian citizens in their occupied areas. The war was the second most devastating loss of human life in the history of Aldia, mostly due to the use of nuclear weapons in the closing stages of the war.

The War of the Three Powers concluded when the nations of the Coalition surrendered to the allied forces of Polystralia and Sanmite. The Coalition of Ordered Governments was dissolved and a program of De-radicalization was implemented amongst the population of former Coalition nations. In the aftermath of the war, the nations of Aldia entered a new golden age of peace and technological advancement which allowed them to enter the first steps of becoming a space-faring civilization. By the end of the war, Aldia was dominated by two superpowers: the Polystralian Commonwealth and the People's Republic of Sanmite with various nations who supported one of them. This situation continued until Aldia was united under a single world government in the 18th century.

The Space Age

Following the end of the War of the Three Powers, the Aldian Cooperative, an international governmental organization was established to foster international cooperation between the nations of Aldia. With the world at peace, the issue of resource degradation was brought to the attention of the international community. Overpopulation also became a key issue as it was estimated the planet would not be able to sustain the growing human population beyond the year 1900. The former nations of the Coalition of Ordered Governments, as well as Sanmite, recognized that the primary motivation of the previous conflict was resource shortages. With the risks clearly outlined and recognized, the Aldian Cooperative urged the nations of Aldia to begin manned missions to potential habitable planets within the Aldian system.

At this point in time, the nations of Aldia had the technology to send manned moon to its nearest habitable planet in the Aldian system; Sram. Sramis 215 million kilometers away from Aldia and research from probes sent confirmed that its environmental conditions such as its atmosphere composition, gravity and length of day is similar to that of Aldia. One year in Aldia is 365 days, the same as Earth's, whereas one year on Sram was 1 year and 380 days. Aldia had a 26-hour day and Sram had a 24 hour day. Aldia had a diameter of 12,453 kilometers and Sram had a diameter of 9,450 kilomters. With the terraforming technology available in the early 16th century, it would take up to century to fully transform an Aldia-sized planet.

On February 1501 the People's Republic of Sanmite successfully landed three humans on Greeton sparking a space race between Sanmite and Polystralia. On April 1506, Polystralia began a series of missions to test the suitability of Greeton for colonization. These were known as the Lazarus Missions, a total of twelve Lazarus Missions were launched between 1506 and 1511. Each Lazarus Mission involved the establishment of a temporary colony in various locations that had been proposed for permanent colonization.

Post-Continental War Era

After the Osean Continental War of 1450, moves towards an Aldian and Osean integration were seen by many as a way to stem the rise of extreme nationalism that devastated the continent. Aldia, as the nation that effectively brought the war to a decisive end was the most active proponent of the an Aldian-Osean integration. The Sanmite and Greeton Republics were the first Osean nations who supported the proposed integration, other Osean nations however, were not. Sanmite and Greeton would prove vital in convincing the other Osean nations to see the fruitful results of an Aldian-Osean integration. Utilizing the Oseans vast natural resources, Aldia was able to produce quality materials which competed well in both the domestic and international market. By 1549 domestic prices stabilized and the economies of Aldia, Sanmite and Greeton surged. Aldian, Sanmite and Gretonese corporations benefited greatly from this economic boom. These corporations expanded their operations into the Osean Federation and Osean Republics whose economies were weakened by the Osean Continental War. These corporations came from various industries. The largest four of these corporations were: Neucom Incorporated, General Resources Ltd, Grunder Industries and the Tamayaka Corporation. While other corporate entities existed as well, these four corporations accounted for roughly 80% of all foreign direct investment in the Osean continent at the time and economic rivalry between these four corporations grew.

Corporate Era

The governments of the Osean Federation and Osean Republics welcomed these corporations with open arms and by 1469 the Osean economies had recovered from its pre-war state. However the influence that these corporations had on the Osean governments soon overshadowed the Osean governments themselves. By 1474 it could be said that the Osean Federation and Republics had ceased to exist as governing entities. In their place, the big four corporations had divided the Osean continent amongst themselves. This process was achieved through subterfuge and a gradual weakening of government influence towards corporate affairs whereas the influence that corporations had on the government increased. The partitioning of the Osean continent was an attempt to avoid conflicts of interest between the four (now) mega-corporations. This was also the first time in written history that corporations had become a sovereign state with their own private security unit. The establishment of these private security units were a cause of great concern for Aldia, Sanmite and Greeton as it gave corporations the power to achieve their means through military force.

Initially the four corporations engaged in espionage, insider-trading and cyber-attacks to weaken their rivals. However these tactics soon became obsolete and minor border skirmishes between corporate military assets soon took place. The first major skirmish was between the four mega-corporations took place on February 1477. In an exploration mission, a Tamayakan mining crew discovered a new deposit of Trinium. Trinium is an extremely rare element but it was a crucial component in most technologies used at the time. A treaty established in 1475 required that any discoveries of new Trinium deposits must be reported to the other mega-corporations. When news of the discovery was announced, the other three corporations demanded that Tamayaka share the new deposit which it refused causing tension amongst the four corporations. After exhausting every possible peaceful diplomatic solution, Neucom Incorporated launched a surprised attack against Tamayaka, securing the deposit site and occupying nearly a quarter of Tamayaka's territory. Unwilling to allow Neucom to reap all of the benefits of the Trinium deposit, Grunder and General Resources formed a temporary alliance and invaded both Tamayaka and Neucom Inc. This marked the beginning of the Corporate War.

Osean Corporate War

The corporate war was a military conflict between the four mega-corporations that were based on the Osean continent. The conflict lasted from February 1477 until November 1477. While the conflict was a relatively short one it was arguably one of the major factors that led to the formation of the Commonwealth of Aldia. At the request of Sanmite and Greeton, the State of Aldia intervened in the Osean Continental War, offering to be a mediator in peace talks, an offer that was refused by the warring factions. The situation in the conflict continued to remain uncertain with no faction being able to gain the upper hand above the other. Meanwhile Sanmite and Greeton grew increasingly worried of a spill-over of the Corporate War as the battles drew closer towards their border. On September 1477 a civilian airliner, mostly carrying Aldian citizens, was mistaken for a military jet and was shot down by General Resources Ltd. This renewed Aldia's calls for peace talks. Three days after the incident a nuclear weapon was detonated at a major Tamayakan city by Neucom Incorporated. The lack of a stable military leadership to oversee the war effort of the corporations has lead to questionable tactics used by the company shareholders.

After the use of nuclear weapons, Aldia finally stepped in, utilizing its OSPs once again to bring the corporations in line. By October 1477 the four corporations military assets were largely neutralized, allowing for a joint Aldian-Sanmite and Gretonese expeditionary force to sweep into the continent and re-establish order. This coalition was known as the Tri-Alliance. On November 1477 the four corporations finally surrendered to the Tri-Alliance and the Corporate War finally came to an end. The corporations were stripped of their political and economic assets, their shares seized by the Tri-Alliance and their military units disbanded. The Osean continent was divided into sixteen independent states and by 1489 all Tri-Alliance occupation forces had left the occupied territories.

Post-Corporate War Era

The Osean nations however saw that they had a better chance of development if they worked together with Aldia, Sanmite and Greeton. By the 10th of April 1553. twelve of the sixteen Osean nations signed the Carter Agreement, establishing the Aldian-Osean Economic Community (AOEC). The AOEC continued to grow, eventually absorbing the remnants of the Osean Republics. In 1582 the Transcontinental Space Exploration Administration (TSEA), another joint venture between the Aldians and Oseans was established. The TSEA would become pivotal in leading space exploration for the future Commonwealth, launching multiple space missions and developing its first indigenous FTL-capable spacecraft, propelling the future Commonwealth into the interstellar stage. After decades of economic growth and development, Aldia finally proposed for the full political integration of the Osean nations with Aldia itself. While initially wary of the proposed structural changes the nations of Sanmite and Greeton once again lobbied the politicians. The writ of union, which was signed and ratified by Aldia and the Osean nations, officially established the Commonwealth of Aldia in 19th of October 1720.

Government & Politics

Aldia is a political union with a presidential system. As a unitary state power is concentrated in the central government who has the final word in every domestic issues. The president and members of the Transcontinental Assembly are directly elected by citizens for a single term of 10 years. A president may only serve two terms in office, these terms does not necessarily have to be consecutive. The president of Aldia is the head of state and head of government, commander-in-chief of the Aldian Self-Defense Forces, and the director of domestic governance, policy-making, and foreign affairs. The president directly appoints a council ministers who does not necessarily have to originate from or approved by the Transcontinental Assembly or affiliated with a political party.

The Transcontinental Assembly is the highest legislative body on the national level. It is comprised of of two houses: the General Assembly (Lower House) with 500 members and the National Assembly (Upper House)with 100 members.The primary functions of the General Assembly are to create policies or treaties which are then forwarded to the National Assembly to be approved, declares war, has the power of the purse, and has the power of impeachment, by which it can remove sitting members of the government. The National Assembly approves legislation and monitors the executive body of the country.

Administrative Divisions

Aldi is administratively divided into five states and two Special Administrative Regions (SARs). The five state are: Aldia (AL), North Osea (NO), West Osea (WO), East Osea (EO), South Osea (SO), Greeton SAR (GRN) and Sanmite SAR (SAE). Each state and SAR has its own legislature and Premier who is the head of government of a state. State elections are held once every ten years as well. The Greeton and Sanmite SARs were established as a recognition of the immense contribution the two regions have given prior to the formation of the Commonwealth and has more autonomy than the regular states. For example, a SAR is allowed to represent itself in international events such as the Olympics. The SARs possess their own governments, legislatures, legal systems, police forces, monetary systems, separate customs territory, immigration policies, national sports teams, official languages, postal systems, academic and educational systems. The Commonwealth government is only responsible for the SARs defense and foreign relations.

Foreign Relations & Military

Prior to the formation of the Laptev Axis, Aldia has maintained a policy of political non-intervention and isolationism. Other than the Osean nations, Aldia rarely interacted with its other immediate neighbors. This was however before a certain event brought all nations of Laptev together, into eventually forming the Laptev Axis. Since then, Aldia has maintained cordial and friendly with all members of the Axis. In terms of foreign relations with non-Axis states, Aldia's diplomatic relations is mostly conducted through the Axis and its views are also the same as the Axis's.

The Aldian Self-Defense Forces is the Commonwealth's unified military body and consists of the Aldian Navy, Aldian Air Force, Aldian Army, Aldian Marine Corps and the Aldian Coastal Defense Force. It is administered by the Department of Offense (DoO) and supported by a substantial domestic arms manufacturing industry. The president of the Commonwealth is the commander-in-chief of the ASDF and, in theory, personally appoints members of the ASDF High Command (HIGHCOM), the highest commanding body of the ASDF. In practice however, ASDF HIGHCOM members are appointed by other HIGHCOM members without requiring the approval of the president.

A compulsory 80-day military training regime is in force for all citizens, both male and female, who have reached the age of 18 and conscription is provided by law. The ASDF however has been able to maintain above than average personnel without resorting to conscription. The ASDF is capable of rapid deployment in space, sea, air and land thanks to a series of strategic logistical emplacements, allowing Joint Strike Forces and Marine Expeditionary Forces to operate independently without external support for a period of 60 days.

Geography

Aldia consists of the home island of Aldia, the Osean continent and 95 islands (30 of which are inhabited and 50 of which are volcanic). A majority of the islands are located just south of Aldia itself with the rest scattered around the Osean continent. Aldia itself is located on the caldera of a dormant super volcano that last erupted 120,000 years ago. Aldia is situated on an active tectonic plate, prompting engineers to incorporate Earthquake-resistant designs into infrastructure projects. The last eruption took place in 2001 and resulted in 4 fatalities. Volcanic ash however is greatly responsible for the high soil fertility rates of the landmasses located near the equator. The northern and southern regions of Osea is extremely mountainous, with spectacular mountain ranges creating a naturally formed border between the state of North Osea and the Sanmite SAR.

Aldia's climate is divided into two regions: the tropics (Aldia, North Osea & Sanmite SAR), and the temperate region (West Osea, East Osea, South Osea and Greeton SAR). The tropics have two distinct seasons: the monsoon and dry seasons. The monsoon lasts from December until late April and is characterized by its high rainfall. The island of Aldia and the mountain ranges of North Osea in particular receive the highest amount of rainfall. The remainder of the year is dominated by the dry seasons, which, as its name suggests, is a period of low rainfall. On the other hand, the temperate region experiences 4 seasons: summer, autumn, winter and spring. The Osean Alps, located at South Osea and (to a small extent) the Greeton SAR is covered with snow all year round.
