Galawen

Galawen is a minuscule region, inhabited by a few solitary nations and only one World Assembly Member.

Throughout Galawen, traditions are kept strictly throughout the region, punishing upstarts and rabble-rousers harshly. Political freedom does not exist. The region is recognized as an extreme dictatorship. Families in the region are so obsessed with the economy that the discussion of laffer curves and supply-side reforms over dinner is a regular occurrence in member nations. The median tax rate of the region is 44%, but is frequently higher for the wealthy. The economies of nations in the region tend to be heavily weighted towards the private sector, with on average 13% of the economy comprising the public sector. Stoking commercial activity is a major priority for governments, accounting for an average of 13% of public expenditure.

Denizens of the Galawen are poorly educated, with rampant illiteracy. The region's law enforcement is arguably too well-equipped and overzealous, arresting citizens who dare to commit the most minor of infractions. Defense is an overarching priority for governments within the region. One might suggest they are compensating for something. Public transport is an afterthought, with only 1% of total government budgets in the region being devoted to it.

Governments in Galawen communicate very well amongst themselves, with administration departments working smoothly, with 3% on average of government budgets being devoted to Administration. Some government provision is made for healthcare, but at an average of only 1% the provision for healthcare in the region is paltry. No welfare is provided in the region. Those unlucky enough to fall into unemployment are forgotten and abandoned. Governments within the region are fixated with religious worship, with nations having an inordinately high average of 13% of total government funds devoted to it.

In Galawen, Social inequality is total, with wealth being held by a tiny fraction of the region's populace. The landscapes of the region are no longer recognizable as such, the atmosphere being unbreathable and the only jungles being made of concrete.

History

Pre-0: Galawen is occupied by the odd tribes, the north being dominated by 'Sut'ki'. The arrival of the Phariopians in the south cause many of the tribes to march south in attempt to push back the settlers. The Phariopians, who bring horses and bronze, repel the tribals, who are armed with little but sticks and stones. The Northern states are settled by Jaubish peoples, who appear from space (so they claim).

0-1912: The Phariopians spread along the south coast, concentrating themselves especially in the South-East. The Jaubish peoples split, with some settling into a snowy mountainous land known as 'Conwayland'. They take the identity of 'Conwaynians', however maintaining good relations with Jaubish peoples. The Tribals of central Galawen reform, and they proclaim 'The Holy Land' in an area of the continent. They follow the religion of 'Catholicism', and send off missionaries West in attempt to convert those of High Phariopianism.

The Catholic missionaries are dismissed in the Chreeesian peninsula, and so travel North to the mountains of Caerhold. Catholicism is popular there, as it is in the Rengard peninsula.

The Sut'ki are alarmed by the Southern expansion. They ride south as a huge horde, laying waste to much of Caerhold the outer reaches of Shydale. A Coalition of knights formed to deal with the threat, known as 'Shydalian Men at Arms' march West, with the aid of many other Galawenian states, to repel the Sut'Ki hordes.

The campaign against the Sut'Ki horde is successful, and the names of the Shydalian Men are praised. The people call for 'Shydale' to be formed out of the remaining central tribes. Shydale is a central nation, sworn to defend everyone against whats left of the Sut'Ki tribals.

The Empire of Manlidav is proclaimed. Formed from the 'civilized' remnants of the Sut'Ki horde, they are viewed on with suspicion from many countries about the continent.

'Old Phario' is proclaimed. Formed from Worksheetland, Phario, Nong Pong and Hazdaland, it is the largest southern empire to date. Internal politics cause it to be shaky and corrupt.

After 200 years of Old Phario, it collapses in on itself. Hazdaland are given permission by the Emperor to leave, whereas Worksheetland and Nong Pong fight bitterly for their independence.

Shydale declares itself a Communist state, adopting the name 'The Peoples Republic of Shydale'. Their history, once proud and glorious, is poisoned by stories of 'fascists' being murdered in the streets.

The Priderodikan Empire declares war on Phario. Their army is smashed against newly developed Phariopian machine guns. The Prids give up large swaths of their southern land, as well as several of their prized ships.

Shydale, under internal pressure, collapses. The communist regime is toppled, and Commissar Schultz is kidnapped by revolutionaries, only to be handed over to Phariopian border guards. The Commissar is locked away for several years.

1912: This is when the history of Galawen starts. Before this time; the UK of Chreees had just conquered the remnants of the People’s Republic of Shydale. The Commissar was handed over to Phariopian authorities by the Shydalians. The Khaarmani declared their own ‘Tribal Republic’. The Jaubish have a colony in the Sut’ki peninsula.

The Phariopians occupied a 10 mile zone in DeWalde, the southernmost province of old Shydale.

The Khaarmani subjugated the province of Neutralia from the Chreeesish.

JaubLand initiated the reformation of her armies, making it a modern fighting force.

The Ruler of Manlidav, Emperor Ban'Shuk VI, has passed away.

The UK of Chreees, The Ard Imperiacht of Caerhold, The Dictatorship of Conwayland and The Empire of JaubLand declare war on the Empire of Manlidav.

The Empire of Phario condemns the invading nations. After some diplomatic magic, the Emperor of Phario persuaded the Gu h-àrd Ceusair de Tighearna agus daoine of Caerhold to pull out of the Manlidavik War.

After having lost faith in the war, the UK of Chreees pulled out of the war and issued an ultimatum to JaubLand to pull out of Manlidav.

The Empire of Phario and the Holy Empire of Hazdaland signed an Anschluss, forming the Empire of Old Phario.

The Empire of JaubLand and The Dictatorship of Conwayland signed an Anschluss, forming the United Empires of JaubLand and Conwayland.

JaubLand accepted the Chreeesish ultimatum, afterwards condemning both Caerhold and Chreees.

Pope Karl V dies.

The Holy Land accepted the offer of protection from Caerhold.

The Isles of Rengard invented the ‘plane’.

Pope Karl VI is elected as leader of the Holy Land, with the leader of Caerhold missing out at second place.

The Empire of Old Phario colonized the Federation of Serif-Periogi, renaming it to ‘Kjellmart’ 1913:

The Phariopian scientists invent the ‘tank’.

The Jaubish and Caerholdian forces attack the Sut’ki, after the biggest raid by them on the Caerholdians.

The Galawenian nations discover lands to the west, including New Galawen and Halgria.

The UK of Chrees, The United Empire of JaubLand and Conwayland and The Priderodikan Empire signed a declaration of independence, forming the Confederacy of Independent Sovereign States (C.I.S.S.)

The Halgri Caliphate crushed their rebellion.

Chreeesish forces attempted to board Jaubish ships stationed in West Bay.

The Empire of Caerhold formed a military junta, disowning over a third of its lands.

The CISS and the League of Galawen (excluding Chreees), attacked Chreees and a conditional peace was signed within a few weeks.

The League of Galawen was dissolved and the Phariopian Assembly replaced it.

Old Phario refuses to hand over control of Cristlant to The Isles of Rengard. Tensions arise. Post-1913:

Old Phario launches an invasion of Rengard, sending two armies south along the peninsula whilst Jalkastan invades from the south. The CISS declare war on the PA.

The war lasts years, exhausting a great deal of Galawens resources. The 'Dentrick Line', constructed in 1913 along the Phario/Priderodki border, holds out and repels most invasions. However, Phario never obtains the manpower to launch a full-scale invasion north, due to several armies being tied down in Rengard.

The war ends, resulting in a stalemate. Both sides are bitter, their armies and land torn apart.

The PA and CISS launch a period of 'Collaboration' whereby both alliances begin working on a space program together.

In 1972, The Halgri Caliphate launches a huge invasion of Galawen. Millions of troops land on the shores of Cristlant and Rengard, transported by a huge navy.

The Battle of South Bay is fought, where 25-strong 1st Fleet of the Phariopian Royal Navy were destroyed by a Halgrian fleet that was 55 ships strong. Phariopian naval power in the south is crushed, leaving the southern shore ripe for landings.

The Halgri Caliphate overruns the garrison of Port Chreeeeees, capturing Field Marshal Krylan. He is shot in the square for 'Fascist Crimes'. Kjellmart is overrun. The world is shocked as journalists and reporters discover the Phariopian Colony to be full of concentration camps, housing those deemed 'unfit for the regime'. Field Marshal Jishan, the commander of the Colony, is nowhere to be found.

Rengard and The Holy Land is overrun. The 'Promised Land', the capital of the Holy Land, is put under siege. The 20,000-strong White Guard, the protectors of the city and the Pope, stand on the walls against a 3million strong force of Halgrian besiegers.

The Halgri Caliphate launches the invasion of the South Coast of Galawen. Phariopian Legionaries, assisted by Jalkastani Troopers, hold the beaches valiantly for several months. Field Marshal Jishan leaves hiding, and reports to Emperor Pharius V for 'the final stand'. He is given command of the remaining Phariopian forces, and issues Order-600: 'Pull back for the final defense of Seaderfall.'

The Hellgate, Phario's southernmost port and home of the fleet, is besieged. The defending force of 20,000 Royal Guard hold out for three years.

Seaderfall is officially besieged. The Phariopian garrison are ordered to hold the Launchpads, from which the Phariopian Mark V spaceshuttles will launch.

Caerhold and Manlidav are invaded by Halgrian troops. Conwayland and Jaubland rush troops south-west in order to prevent a wide-scale occupation of Galawen. The fighting is bitter, with Halgrian numbers putting pressure on Jaubish-Conway troops. The defending troops, bound by blood, hold valiantly as waves upon waves of Halgrian conscripts attack.

The Battles of The Wide Sea are fought. The 'submarine war' as it is often called, was pinnacle in the defense of the East Galawenian Coast, preventing many Halgrian transport ships from reaching it.

23 Phariopian Mark V rockets are launched from Seaderfall. Only 25 make it to orbit. The Phariopian Royal Family are amongst those to make it into orbit. Construction on the CISS-PA spacestation begins.

Jaubish-Conway troops are pushed out of Manlidav and Caerhold, right back into Northern Shydale. By this point, all of Phario bar the mountains of Jupuius and Seaderfall are under brutal occupation. Seaderfall remains under siege.

Rockets are launches all across northern Galawen, docking with the PA-CISS spacestation constructed several months before.

The Galawenian nations collapse, with many citizens taking advantage of the situation. The Northern states fall into anarchy, with many troops deserting in the face of Halgrian onslaught. The Phariopian I Royal Guard holds the Capitol Building of Seaderfall until the last man. Seaderfall, or what little left of it after years of sieging, is occupied.

By 2003, all nations of Galawen are aboard the PA-CISS spacestation. They freeze themselves cryogenically and board the shuttles that depart for System-A1, in search for a new life.

Three hundred years pass, and the Galawenian nations arrive in System-A1, where they begin mixing and colonizing with the natives.
