The UICA Super Cup was a football competition contested between the winners of the three major UICA competitions: the Champions’ Cup, the Globe Cup, and the Series B Champions’ Cup. Following the disappearance of UICA, the tournament was succeeded by the IFCF Super Cup.
Format
The Super Cup consists of three matches, which are hosted by each of the three participating teams. The Globe Cup champion hosts the first match against the Series B Champions’ Cup champion, which then hosts the second match against the Champions’ Cup champion, which then hosts the third match against the Globe Cup champion. The teams are ranked in a conventional league table with three points for a win and one point for a draw; if teams are tied on points, the team with the greater goal difference or the most goals scored is awarded the higher ranking. If teams are still tied, kicks from the penalty mark are played after the final match. If the Series B Champions’ Cup champion, which does not play in the final match, is involved in the tie (which has only happened once, in Super Cup 8), a fifteen-minute break is provided for them to warm up on the field and for their opponent to rest.
In the exceptional case that all three teams are tied—either because all three matches were drawn by the same score, or because each team won a match by the same score—the competition regulations call for a three-way penalty shootout. Each team would take six shots, alternately against the two opposing goalkeepers. If all three teams are still tied after six shots, the shootout continues in rounds of two shots each until the tie is broken. If at any point one team is removed from the tie, either by securing first place or third place, the shootout is reduced to a conventional one between the two remaining teams. This procedure has never been needed in the Super Cup, but was demonstrated once in the Aeropag Football Invitational, which borrowed from the Super Cup format for the three-team semifinal groups used in the twentieth edition.
Each participating team is awarded medals according to its placing: gold medals for first place, silver medals for second place, and bronze medals for third place. Since UICA stopped awarding third place in the Globe Cup in season 33, the Super Cup has been the only UICA competition with an award for third place. The winning team is awarded the Super Cup trophy, which must be returned the next season in exchange for a four-fifths scale replica. Teams which win the trophy three times consecutively or five times in total are allowed to retain it permanently, with a new trophy produced for next season, and are awarded the UICA Star for the competition. Yuba United was the first team to achieve this, winning its fifth title in Super Cup 48.
Given the formidable challenge for a team newly-promoted to the top flight matched against two of the world's best club teams, only one team has ever won the Super Cup as the SBCC winner: Scapa Bay Rovers from Polar Islandstates.
