The applications of the punishment are limited by the Fifth Amendment to the Laiatanese Constitution to aggravated murders by mentally competent adults, terrorism, treason, espionage, and genocide.

The most common methods since 1983 have been lethal injection, firing squad, and hanging.
In 2015, 16 inmates were executed by the provinces and federal government, and 352 inmates were on death row.
