Lysandus, officially the Kingdom of Lysandus (Lysandean: Royaume de Lysandus), is the second most populated nation in Telephassa. Lysandus is located in an Peninsula called Crowned Peninsula, covering the coastal plains and lowlands associated with the valley of the rivers Comte and Parloys. It enjoys humid subtropical climate everywhere but in the northern reaches where the climate is more temperate, making it a prime destination for leisure tourism. Several areas of the lysandean coast like the Côte Royal near Port-au-Comte or the Côte de Angélique further east are world-renown for the quality of their beaches.

Etymology

Lysandus is likely based on an alteration of "Lys Andes" (modern form), or mountains of lys, a name that has been used to describe the region around Port-au-Comte and the King Mountains - the northern-most location of the country - since at least the time of the Holy Telephassonic Empire.

Culture

Language

Main article: Lysandean language

The official language of Lysandus is Lysandean, a standard which is closely tied to Znalt and Lorian. Lysandean started to diverge during the 14th century, a trend which was encouraged in the following century by governments desirous of asserting the distinctiveness of Lysandean culture from the Sacroimperial cultures. Spelling rules were simplified at various occasions to erase irregularities and reduce the number of available graphemes, while pronunciation remained closer to that of Znalt's. Regional languages are practically extinct after their use has been continuously discouraged by the state for more than 700 years. Nearly all lysandean now speak only Lysandean, or Znalt as a secondary language, even though the two are mostly mutually intelligible.

Sports

A wide variety of sports are available in Lysandus, the most popular being soccer, auto sports and rowing. Most were introduced during the 19th century, but reached their full extent during the Jacobist reign, when extensive state promotion of sportsmanship was used as a propaganda tool by the regime. The extent of this promotion has greatly declined since the end of the Jacobistism, but some remains in secondary education, where most schools form one or several classes (clases sport) with emphasis on sport to compete in regional championships.

Military

Lysandus maintains an extensive military, divided into the Armée Royal (Army), Flotta (Navy), and Armée de l'Air (Air Force). Beyond these, there are also two independent arms of service: the Lysandean Aerospace Control Project and the Central Rocket Command. There is mandated conscription for men between the ages of 18 and 30, with a conscription term of four years. Officially, in 2008, the Lysandean government is spending around $220 billion (some 7% of the Lysandean Gross Domestic Product) on the military, although the actual number is believed to be substantially higher.

The King is formal commander-in-chief of the Lysandean military, but practically the High Military Commission ultimately commands the military, consisting of the High Lord Commander of each of the branches of the Lysandean armed forces. Additionally, the War Ministry has a role in maintaining communication between the High Military Commission and the Apparatus at large.

Conventions

  • Lysandus exclusively uses the metric system.
  • Like most countries, Lysandus uses infix notation. Use of the long scale was once frequent, but is now discouraged in favor of either engineering notation or its prefixes.
  • The comma (,) is used as decimal separator, while a point (.) is used between every group of three digits. In addition, the currency symbol (ly$) is put after the number, with one space in between. Thus, ly$42,395.25 would be written 42.395,25 ly$ in Lysandus.
  • 24-hour clock time is used, with h being the separator between hours and minutes. Thus, 11:45 a.m. would be written 11h45.
  • Daylight saving time is observed.
  • Dates are written in the day-month-year order, with ordinary numerals for days and years and Ascesian numerals for months, and the point (.) as a separator. Thus, 22 September 2010 would be written 22.IX.2010.
