The Mahigans are a lupine ethnic group historically native to central Laiatan and share a common history, ancestry, culture, and speak the Laiatanese language as their mother tongue.
Following several thousand years of conflict and domination, the Mahigans became the dominant ethnic group in Laiatan. This is still true today, with roughly 54% of citizens identifying themselves as Mahigan. The Mahigans effectively dominated early Laiatan life, forcing the three other ethnic groups of Laiatan to learn the Mahigian language, which would later be renamed to "Laiatanese" to instill a feeling of unity following the total conquest of the other tribes.
With more than 160 million people identifying as Mahigan, it is the largest lupine ethnic group. It is believed that most of these people can speak Laiatanese either as a first or second language, totaling the number of speakers to be roughly 450 million people.
Mahitou is a huge part of Mahigan life, as well as with the other tribes of Laiatan. The Mahigans had no need to force conversions, as the other tribes already followed the religion. Any lupine who did not follow Mahitou was frowned upon in Mahigan society, and was viewed as a traitor. In modern times, it's far less likely you'll be shunned for following another religion or not having religion, though there is still certainly stigma for not.
