The Republic of Seketan (sometimes called the 2nd Republic of Seketan) is a constituent country in the United Republics of Seketan and Jacland. It is in the Nelborne Union and represents itself despite the lack of sovereignty. The nation is 567187 km² in area, and thus is the 50th biggest country in the world and 2nd biggest in the NU. Seketan is split into 6 provinces, each with some level of autonomy, though very little.

Seketan was originally occupied by an a nordic group called Secens who spoke Secens language, later Old Seketese. When French colonists came in the late 1500s, the two groups made an alliance and founded the Kingdom of Seketan. This short lived was the start of the combination of Secens and European culture, aka modern Seketese culture. The kingdom was not globally recognized despite city construction and was quickly annexed by the newly founded Kingdom of Alquiya.

The Kingdom of Alquiya later became the United States of Alquiya. Throughout this time, Alquiya paid no expense for Seketan's culture. This enraged the people of Seketan and in the early 1900s, a huge boycott and eventually uprising was started by the newspaper Seketan Today. This led into the Seketese Independence War which create modern day Seketan.

Early in modern Seketan, the goal was to rebuild the country after the war and become a great socialist state. Seketan supported the Soviet Union during the cold war. Cities were reconstructed and made into grand centres. After the capitalistic revolution when Seketan started becoming a little less socialist, Seketan became wealthy. This new found wealth was used to create famous programs like free education (of all types) and healthcare (of all types).

Seketan today is a hub for economics and culture within Nelborne. Seketan became powerful and had a lot of influence. Seketan and Jacland would eventually form Nelborne Union, a unification of the Nelborne Islands and other nations nearby. The two nations would then united, and then form the URS in 2015.

The country is split into 6 provinces, with one mostly French speaking autonomous region consisting of 2 provinces, called Fjéska.

Etymology

The nordic people in Seketan referred to themselves as the "Secens" which translates to human. They called the Earth "Secetan" (or Seketan) which meant "Human's Land". The word "Aletan" referred to the land south of Seketan (what is today Alquiya). Alquiya was partly named after the Secens name of the land.

Residents in Seketan are called "Seketese" in English but are called "Seketeça" in the Seketese language. The word "seket" which means speak comes from the word "secen" (which is already established meaning human) and it roughly translate to "human sound". However, it is difficult to find exact translation since there are so little writings done in Secens language.

History

Early History

Before French colonization, Seketan (and the rest of the Nelborne) was settled by people of Nordic origin sometime between 1000s to 1100s without return. Thus, isolation between Europe was created. New languages were formed, including Old Seketese (or Secens language) which was formed by Nordic origin natives called Secens. Their permanent houses and farming made them seem more civil to the colonists later on.

In 1567, the Nelborne Islands were discovered along with the nordic group - Secens - by French explorers. Finding that the land was fertile and healthy, settlers settled onto the land. The settlers traded with the aboriginal people there and they eventually grew a strong bond - an unofficial alliance. This led to the creation of the Kingdom of Seketan in 1631.

The Kingdom of Seketan made decisions with vote. The leaders were all part of the royal family which started from an respected explorer that married Secen's chief's daughter. The short lived kingdom was not recognized by France or many other empires. The language Seketese was formed roughly around the creation of the Kingdom of Seketan - French was still spoken. Seketese is Secen language with influences from European languages such as French, English, and Dutch.

Kingdom of Alquiya 1694 - 1801

Seketan was eventually swallowed up by the brand new Kingdom of Alquiya in 1694: a new but strong empire that forcefully split from France. The Kingdom of Alquiya peacefully annexed The Kingdom of Seketan. The royal family had no power anymore. Seketan became merely a province of the Kingdom of Alquiya. Alquiya provided protection and economic support to Seketan but many Alquiyans were uncomfortable to have such a different culture in their kingdom. However, the people were fairly content and lived in harmony until the collapse of the Alquiyan Kingdom.

The United States of Alquiya: 1801 - 1940s

After shortly becoming its own nation before being conquered by Desland, Desland among other countries united to form the United States of Alquiya. When Desland conquered Seketan, it became a territory with no representation. It stayed that way into Alquiya. This cause civil unrest and eventually uprisings.

World Wars I and II

Because of Seketan being very influenced by the Secens, Seketese had a somewhat unique way of fighting. Warriors would sneak around point - surrounding it - and then charging in from all sides. This strategy was loosely used in World War I and II. Seketese troops went to Europe under Alquiya during the two wars. They sided with the allies and fought along side American and Canadian troops under agreement. Roughly 100 Seketese troops fought in World War I and 1,000 in World War II along with 250 other Alquiyan troops in WWI and 3,000 in WWII.

Seketese War of Independence: 1942 - 1947

In the years 1913, the Alquiyan government attempted assimilation on Seketan as both of their cultures were quite different. Seketan had different laws and norms than the rest of the Alquiyan states. While Seketese politicians have been fighting for more recognition from Alquiya ever since the 1800's, the idea of revolution only sparked when a journalist of the Seketan Today newspaper with a degree in politics named David Behn pushed for it in opinion articles. A man named Joseph L. Tinnerdam, a passionate public spokesman, also supported separation but still wanted to keep ties with Alquiya. The two men would eventually both run for office in Seketan. Behn in 1936 was elected Senator of Alquiyan Seketan and pushed for independance - complete separation. Tinnerdam strongly opposed Behn as he said, "While Seketan deserves to be its own nation for the sake of the different cultures, we must stay loyal to Alquiya as Alquiya provides."

Behn and his colleagues would form a militia of 300,000 men and a military of 5,000. Trade routes to Alquiya would usually go to Seketan for the sake of convenience. This helped Behn as he was able to access weapons. Many of Behn's supporters were in the north while Tinnerdam supporters and pro-Alquiyans were in the south. The North and South fought for the next five years as control over many Seketese cities were back and forth between Behn and Tinnderdam.

Behn was assassinated in 1945 along with many of his colleagues. One of Behn's colleagues Loren Allis, survived the attack and proceeded to capture Seketan and lead Behn's troops. In the end, Allis took control of Conelibek City, the capital. Because Tinnerdams forces were weak and Alquiya was in debt trying to keep control over Seketan, the Republic of Seketan was formed in 1947 with Loren Allis as the first of many Seketese Prime Ministers.

The 1st Alquiyan-Seketese War: 1949-1951

Taking advantage of Alquiya's debt, Seketan declared war on Alquiya and annexed what is now today most of western Seketan. Alquiya suffered greatly from losing a big fraction of their land.

The Democratic Act of 1959

Loren Allis introduced a democratic act after realising he had not heir. With democracy, he thought he could give the people who they want after he passes. Democracy and democratic values were introduced but surprisingly, the nation remained quite the same.

The Nelborne War/The 2nd Alquiyan-Seketese War: 1961-1969

Full Article: Great Nelborne War

Before the war, Seketan had border disputes with Alquiya. Before in 1955, Seketan conquered most of what is now west Seketan. In a attempt to retake the land, Alquiya declared war on Seketan in 1961 and sent ground troops there. Seketan called for allies and had Jacland send troops in exchange for information and war technology. Saxe-Wittenburg and North Vestbeyholm followed suit in helping Seketan. They would fight for the next couple years with no other nations involved.

State of Paul, having unfriendly relations with Jacland, bombed New Karsk - a Jacish city. The reason was for vengeance as the Jacish government support Lucar during State of Pauls revolt against Lucar and eventual separation. This caused war between the two nations. Lormotia, extremely friendly with State of Paul, declared war on Jacland. Seketan, Dealand, Saxe-Wittenburg, North Vestbeyholm, and Lucar then declared war on Lormotia in response. State of Paul and Alquiya then declared war on Seketan, Great Bay, and Lucar in response. In the end, there were two sides: the North's and the Souths.

The Norths would eventually become victorious. The Norths alliance sparked the great relationship Jacland and Seketan would have, which would later lead to unification. Seketan in the end gained land from Lormotia and Alquiya, and its size today was established.

The Capitalistic Revolution: 1979-1985

Seketan during the 40s to 70s was a more socialist country that some might even consider communist. While it wasn't overly restrictive and you were still free to start companies and purchase foreign products, it wasn't too popular. Private industry was regulated and restricted. Because of this, most companies had no interest in Seketan. However, Seketan's economy crashed in 1979 and in an effort to fix this, the government made gave less restrictions to corporations within Seketan. Because of this, the now popular Gyenors' Pizza and Soda Co. exploded in success. Other companies began to join in. Foreign shops flooded Seketan within the years 1979 to 1985. Censorship in the media was at an all time low and the entertainment industry in Seketan flourished as many inappropriate, tasteless, violent, and/or foreign films were broadcasted, sold, and shown in theatres. Private industry became very common in Seketan rather than seldom and therfore, Seketan's economy became very strong.

With the huge increase of money, Seketan introduced many welfare programs. The government was also able to make all education and healthcare state-owned and free. In 1981, Seketan gave Gyenors Co. many business grants. With the help of the government, Gyenors' Soda and Pizza expanded within the NU and it became very popular.

Unification

After several treaties, 3 nations (including Seketan) joined a union that would put all the nations under one flag for militaristic and economic purposes. The union created possibly the most powerful nation in the NU, considering it has two big powers, formerly independent, and two moderate powers. This union would be the Seketan and Jacland, or the United Republics of Seketan and Jacland.

Geography

Seketan is quite humid due to the water surrounding it. In the west, there are mountains and some volcanos. Around the mountains are great preserved forests. The centre of Seketan that contains the four largest cities is mostly plains and contains several small bodies of water and the great river of Ellentros. The river is the source of water for Seketan and several other nations.

Climate

Most of Seketan has a Linkmarine climate. Summers can get warm, but winters can be very cold with the north Atlantic current and the close proximity to the Arctic.

Urban Areas

The east coast, west coast, and the centre of Seketan contain the most urban areas. The province of Gyenor which is located in the centre of Seketan contains the four largest cities in Seketan. The area is almost completely urban within the triangle Conelibek, Loria, and Winneston form. Gyenor is the centre of Seketan, both figuratively and literally.

The east coast touches two provinces: Eastern Province and Secens Country. While these places are not the most populated compared to the west coast or the centre, they are where most tourists first arrive when travelling from The Seketese Republic of Dominion Of Jacland or The Tsardom of Lormotia. The east coast, particularly the south, contain the most French speakers in Seketan.

The west coast touches two provinces as well: Jorji-Alesk-Neyelsta and Nelesk.

Provinces and Administrative Entities

The country is split into 6 provinces, 2 of which are in the Fjéska administrative entity. These are:

Economy

Seketan's economy is led by the business sector and the oil industry.

Seketan is home to many private organizations, mostly ones that keep within Seketan's borders. Originally, the country's economy was weaker than it is today, due to the lack of private industry. After the Capitalistic Revolution of 1979, private industry flourished after lowered taxes and more business grants. Since then, Seketan's economy has been strong, exporting mostly the other nations within the URS, Lucar, Saxe-Wittenburg, and many others with the Nelborne Islands.

Religion

The majority of people in Seketan do not follow or identify with any particular religion. Many say they have no belief in any deity what so ever. However, there is still a large amount of christian influence.

Religion plays little to no effect in the federal government.

Seketan's budget spends nothing on religious services. Churches, mosques, and other places of worship are all taxed and are seen as any private property. However, places of worship can register to be officially seen as places of worship with the Seketese Board of Religion.

The Seketese Board of Religion oversee religious activities within places of worship. They handle everything related to religion in Seketan. While the board recognizes many religions, it tries to abolish any biases toward any religions.

Culture

Seketese culture is often descrive as a mix of French and Nordic culture. The language is one of the most important parts, as it separated Seketan from Alquia driving independence. Seketan has been a centre for culture and economics in the Nelborne, and influences many other nations.

Language

The language of Seketese is one of the key factors that keep Seketese nationalism alive. It drove cultural differences between Seketan and Alquiya which was one of the factors that caused the Seketese Independence war. There is also a very large French speaking population, which often has its own culture. These people are French Seketese. Similar to French Canadians, they are the minority but contain a significant percent of the population.

Sports

Traditional Seketese sports consist of tag-esc games and ball games. However, these games are not played and didn't have and currently don't have a significant effect on Seketese culture. However, the sport hockey has become extremely popular in Seketan starting in the early 1900s. Hockey was made Seketan's nation sport after the Seketese War of Independence.

Seketan is known for hockey and has much success in international tournaments. Seketese team colours are white with aqua blue sleeves and green highlights.
