The Serene People's Republic of Baykalia, commonly known as Baykalia, is a nation that exists on the continent Aurora that has a large border with Xiopothos to the west and Caltharus to the east, and exists south of East Malaysia. The nation, with a Nominal GDP of $1.134 Billion has abysmal income inequality, with the richest 6% holding 95% of the wealth. Baykalia is wedged between the countries Xiopothos and Caltharus, with a small southern border with Kostromastan. Baykalia also has control of five islands that are located in the Caven Sea. The largest city and the capital city Chita hold approximately 62% of the population, Irkutsk, the second largest city, holding 1,471,471 people and Chita holding 1,477,964 people. Farming is very common in the northern half of the country, due to the lush plains there, while the southern half of the country is engulfed in desert, where little to no farms exist.

The History of Baykalia is greatly intertwined with its neighbors Tuvaltastan and Kostromastan, and goes back as far as 1,700 B.C.E., beginning with the Ancient Kostuvians and their immense empire that encompassed central Aurora and a number of small islands north and south of the continent, as well as part of what is now modern-day Dragonia. The Kostuvian Empire existed for 1,032 years, and was succeeded by Kostuvastan in 12 A.D. Kostuvastan existed for 1,973 years until the three major culture groups (Baykalians, Tuvalts, and Kostros) began the Kostuvastan Civil War. The three culture groups, after the Civil War, founded the three nations Tuvaltastan, Kostromastan, and Baykalia.

Etymology

The name "Baykalia" is a combination of the words Bay and Kalivia. The "Bay" in the name simply represents the bay on the north coast. The "kal" stems from the "Kal" in the name "Kalivian Mountains."

History

Separation of Kostuvastan

(See Kostuvastan Civil War)

After becoming an independent state separate from Kostuvastan, Baykalia began working to repopulate the country which had suffered horrendously devastating casualties throughout the war. Nonetheless, the remaining 280,000 people who survived the war established a constitution around simple voting. Due to the small number of eligible voters, this system was easily set up, as smaller numbers can typically get things done quicker.

Recovery from the Near-Genocide

The Baykalians were a devastated group, having only approximately 280,000 people left after the slaughter. After the war, the 280,000, better known as the 280K, formed the nation Baykalia on June 19th, 2006. Due to the dangerously low population, reproduction was encouraged, and the efforts of the original 280,000 managed to bring the population up to 4,757,153 people in 2015. As such, a single generation currently makes up 94.1% of the population, all 16 years or younger most of which have been put through the Youth Scouts program in The Veridian Union. The parent-to-offspring ratio is currently an astonishing 22 children for every two parents. This very worrying ratio resulted in the older 5.9% of Baykalians to establish a temporary universal basic income, so as to only focus on raising the next generation. This income is kept going by the massive surplus that was left sitting during the Civil War, as the Baykalians had kept the Kostuva Credit. As such, the Baykalian unemployment rate is technically 95%, and most of the population takes part in subsistence farming. The Universal Basic Income is going to be eliminated once half of the 94.1% reach or exceed the age 18. The only people that are not subsistence farmers are governmental employees, who keep the nation from destroying itself economically by participating in the global economy.

Modern-Day Baykalia

Currently, Baykalia is under an Oligarchic system in which all the power is being focused in the Executive branch of government, with the other two branches gradually losing more and more power. Under the rule of Lady Posol, Baykalia is also gradually improving its economy, though the income equality in the nation remains dismal, with only about 30,000 people holding jobs, the rest being unemployed.

Politics

Governmental System

As of March 13th, 2017, Baykalia was converted into a crony oligarchy, with the Clan Leader and members of the Elite Council having total control of the nation. Baykalia was originally a direct democracy, consiting of a judicial and executive branch. The system of government was altered to an oligarchic system upon the accession of Lady Posol as the Clan Leader (CL), following multiple scandalous actions taken prior to Lady Posol's candidacy for CL, including a series of mergers performed by Posol Industries that resulted in Posol Industries obtaining a monopoly, the installation of a universal daycare center/ recreational center that influenced and propagandized the youth of Baykalia to become supportive of Lady Posol. This daycare also included a recreation center for children ages 16 and up, those age groups being able to vote. Upon the 2017 election, 83% of people ages 16-18 had voted for Lady Posol, resulting in a landslide victory for Mrs. Posol. Hours after taking office, Posol announced her choices for the Elite Council, the council of advisors to the CL, those choices being incumbents Lord Remis Posol (spouse of Lady Posol and CEO of Posol Industries), Yorov Worovich (CEO of Baykalian Broadcasting Service), Tivia Firivia (CEO of The Kuba Group, a company focused around children's products and services), and Jorkovol Wolinski (COO of Posol Industries). On April 3rd of the same year, Lady Posol proposed the decrease of power in the Judicial Branch. A vote took place a month later on May 3rd, with the people of Baykalia voting for the termination of the Judicial Branch, supplying Lady Posol and her Council with complete control over the people of Baykalia.

Domestic Policy

Currently, the Posol Administration's primary goal is to increase the nation's GDP,

Foreign Policy

Lady Posol has announced that she wishes to shift its relations from the Auroran Continental Assembly to more fascist nations like the Veridian Union and The Three States of Fortuna, and further increase the power of Posol Industries in the global market.

Military

There is currently no major military force in Baykalia, due to the chaos of the Baykalian Genocide. A multitude of military vessels and vehicles are in reserve, and are not currently used by Baykalia. In preparation for when a military can be supported, there are five general positions that have been established: Commander, General, Second General, Colonel, and Captain.

Culture

Food

Traditional foods are not typically made by Baykalians, as making such foods would require too much time out of raising children.

Customs and Traditions

Literature

Many Baykalians were literary artists before the genocide.

Festivities

Holidays

There are no official holidays observed by the Baykalian government, but enough vacation days are given so that the major holidays, and some other smaller events can be celebrated with family. The typical number of vacation days given is 36 days.

Geography

The nation of Baykalia is wedge-shaped, and consists of three primary regions: The North Plains, The Kalivian Mountains, and The Great Auroran Desert. Most of the population can be found north of the mountains, while a single city exists in the desert, that city being Irkutsk.

Climate

The northern plains are relatively humid, while the desert is consistently hot and dry.

Agriculture

The entire northern half of Baykalia is predominantly farmland, the exception being Chita. In order to prevent any disease killing off the plants, the largest-produced crops are grown in the same fields. Growing them in the same fields boost all the crops' immune systems.

Industry

A multitude of crops are grown throughout the northern plains, with little space for commercial industries. As such, the major cities of Baykalia are growing vertically so that all current farmland can be preserved. Some industries that are located within Baykalia include the transport company Posol Industries, which has grown from its initial delivery business to now cater to many more powerful groups, most prominently Serenitech.
