A referendum on creating a republic was held in the Laiatanese Empire on March 9, 1887. After the collapse and overthrow of the military junta, the issue of the form of government remained unsolved. Anger towards Yuri IV, the Laiatanese monarch, for his role in allowing the junta to rise resulted in a vote to completely scrap the monarchy that had ruled Laiatan since 1154 and establish a new form of government. Yuri IV was banned from any campaigning in the referendum by the provisional government. The proposal was approved overwhelmingly by 89.3% of voters with a turnout of 78%.
