Laiatan (Laiatanese: Mahiganland), officially known as the Laiatanese Federation (Laiatanese: Mahiganland Federalyse), is a country situated on the western part of the continent of Itur, which is located in The East Pacific. It is a federal presidential constitutional republic, comprising of 38 provinces. From north to east, Laiatan borders Terre Videum, Sophis, Tano, and Vulshain. It shares a disputed maritime border with the nation of Warre to the south, as well as a maritime border with Old Federalia to the southeast. It is renowned across the region for its population of lobos, a wolf-like species that make up roughly 99% of the total population.

Before the formation of the Kosma Dynasty in 602, the nation was splintered into several tribal federations. These tribal federations have made their mark on Laiatan today, as the ethnic groups that make up the nation today are direct descendants of the tribes that once made up the nation. The Mahigans launched several military campaigns and political reforms to create the Kosma Dynasty. Through continued military and diplomatic actions, the Kosma Dynasty grew to become the Koroldom of Laiatan. Mahigans remained in control of the country for the entirety of the monarchy, 1,151 years, as well as into the first century of the Federation.

Since the beginning of the Federation in 1757, the country has had multiple "golden ages" and high economic growth. It is a highly developed nation that is filled with fiercely patriotic people, viewing themselves as brothers and sisters of the Federation. The country has only seen one violent uprising since the beginning of the Federation, an attempted coup d'état which failed following fierce street fighting between the capitalist "Loyalists" and the communist rebels. The country has also been involved in military incursions outside of its borders. Laiatanese forces invaded their neighbor Vulshain twice in order to bring the country to peace, once during a revoultion, the other during a civil war. A founding member of SITO, the country currently has troops occupying Rygard as part of a joint operation with Vulshain.

Tribal Laiatan

Map of the various tribes that inhabited "Tribal Laiatan", circa 6th century AD.
The tribes that made up Laiatan before its unification are thought to date from the Lobo Bronze Age. From their origins in what is now the province of Okezuka, the tribes in all directions away from the coast. By the 6th century AD, four major tribal groups had dispersed themselves across the territory. These tribes were split into smaller individual tribes, most of which had confederation-styled governments.

In the late 6th century, a Mahigan tribe known as Lai' began political and military conquests across the lands that are now a part of Volkapita. Under leadership by Svetlav Kosma, the tribe grew to include territory of Teekon and Singarti tribes. Lai' grew to become a rather large, unified nation that remained surrounded by tribal confederations.

Kosma ordered a new capital to be built within his borders, on the site of his first conquered village near the Ryikon River in 600 AD. He personally oversaw the construction of several original government buildings including the original Mahihaus and Federation Assembly Building, then known as the House of Lords.

By mid 602 AD, the national government buildings had been completed, as well as a school, jail, church, and enough homes for 750 citizens. Later in the year, enough space had been made for almost 2,000 citizens - which were quickly filling and expanding. With the city ever expanding, Svetlav Kosma declared the city 'Volkgoroda'. With a seat for a national government, Kosma named the lands he held after himself and crowned himself King of the Lobos.

In response to this, another dynasty rose up in the Teekon area of Laiatan, named after its leader Vladimir Letov. These two nations would grow to become major rivals and trading partners.
