The Volkgoroda Guards (Laiatanese: Волкоградская гвардия, tr. Volkogradskaya gvardiya) was a branch of the Laiatanese imperial military from 1858-1886. Originally a small force intended to protect the emperor, royal family, and high ranking imperial officials, it was expanded in 1864 to include defending Volkgoroda itself. They were disbanded in 1886 following the end of the Laiatanese Civil War.
The Volkgoroda Guards played a key part in the July Coup that seized power in 1880, handing control of the country to Leonid Arzamastsev with orders from Konstantin Yevdokimov. They swore allegiance to Arzamastsev following the success of the coup, and acted as his bodyguards and personal police force until the outbreak of the Laiatanese Civil War after a failed coup in 1885 by Yevdokimov. The Guards split after the coup, some choosing to fight for Arzamastsev while the others fought for Yevdokimov.
Organized rebel groups ultimately defeated coup forces, and Arzamastsev and Yevdokimov were both hanged for their roles in the coup.
