The Free Land of Emberwood Coast, better known as Emberwood Coast (ˈem:bər:wo͝od kōst), is a nation that exists on the continent Aurora that has borders with Axdel and Quartz Fern Coast. Emberwood Coast exists between the latitudes 45 South and 50 South, and between the longitudes 54 East and 62 East. The country is highly technologically advanced, featuring a robust research sector as well as a far-reaching Space Administration. The large lake in the center, Mapleleaf Lake, is home to a vast array of temperate wildlife. Most of the nation is colder due to the nation's high latitude, and it regularly snows in the capitol.
History
As the 1960's rolled in, with them came the anti-imperial sentiments of rock music, recreational drug use, and a new explosion of differing ideologies from outside the empire. As these influences combined with the already roiling tensions of the various regions within Morstaybishlia caused the beginning of the end for the Auroran giant.
In the northwest, a popular movement around individual rights and freedom began to arise. With the birth of Chance Syng in 1952, however, the fate of that portion of the empire was sealed. In 1970, a popular movement of succession was all that was talked about in what was soon to be Norograd. Lord Thesius Crumpus Vorenstein, governor of what is now Emberwood Coast and Northern Quartz Fern Coast, cracked down on the protests that were flaring up around his estate with police. When they were just eighteen years old, Syng stood in front of an officer who had been attacking a man, and refused to move. Realizing what they were doing to their own community (most normal duty officers were recruited from the provinces they worked) and turned on the imperial forces. Three days later, on January 18th, 1970, Lord Voernstein was exiled and Syng, who'd lead several of the revolts before their incident in front of police, was then elected as temporary leader of what was briefly "New Staynes," then, after she decided to leave Norograd, finally settled in its current borders as Emberwood Coast.
1970-1980
A relatively young nation, Emberwood Coast has been around for only 40 years. The nation is a breakaway territory of Norograd (which itself was a breakaway from the Morstaybishlian Empire) since the outbreak of the Auroran Imperial War. As tensions grew and war raged on, the citizens of the coast could no longer allow themselves to add to the fight.
As the bloody fight for independence was fought, numerous rock songs spurred the population to action. Among them was "This Free Land", which eventually was adopted as the national anthem.
Out of this rose a democratic government; Chance Syng was elected president on April 19th, 1970 (and again in 1972). This officially began the existence of Emberwood Coast as a sovereign nation.
1980-1990
In 1981, evidence implicating the Coast in allegations of intelligence operations during the Imperial War; although it later turned out the missions were all preventative against WMD attacks by various nations. The operation in Norograd, however, failed. A bad decision on the part of Syng coupled with bad luck left two agents dead and indirectly resulted in the kinetic weapon attack on Ethalria. Amid the turmoil of finger pointing and political investigations, President Syng resigned on November 30th, 1981. Just weeks later, Kayla Hansleigh was elected to take their place as president of the Coast.
Hansleigh's presidency was mostly uneventful, besides occasional foreign aid drops the nation could almost have been said to have been isolationist.
1990-2000
Hansleigh's main focus was Scientific Advancement. In 1982 she organized the Emberwood Coast Space Exploration Administration (ECSEA).
After the end of Hansleigh's second term, Darson Nanokono was elected to the presidency on January 9th, 1994. As a continuation of zir predecessor's scientific programs, ze authorized the construction of Perpetua Station. Later that year, the USV Ascension was completed, and launched into orbit on February 29th, 1995.
2000-2010
On August 7, 2005, Perpetua Station was ripped apart in a micro-meteor strike, killing all four crewmembers aboard. The nation grieves for months. The incumbent president narrowly won reelection in 2006, facing Harriet Young, who rode a wave of isolationist nationalism, pushed to the forefront by the development of the internet and instant information services. Historians agree that had the election taken place even a year or so later, Young would now be in power.
2010-2020
Nimona Poole was elected president in 2012, and immediately set about making the nation's world class education available for all citizens, regardless of gender, sexuality, species, race, or financial status.
The next several years began a slight downward trend into conflict. As numerous new nations rose to international power, Poole found herself trapped in networks of treatises and alliances, and the Emberwood Coast Armed Forces were deployed in several battles; The Foratemerian incident, Battle of Tival, the Four Days War, all examples of the increasing operations of the military.
Finally, as 2017 came, the Treaty of Aura went into effect. Still wishing to maintain neutrality in the numerous growing political fissures on Urth, Poole began to forge new agreements with other nations, in an attempt to forestall further war. Nimona Poole was reelected in 2018 on a platform of peace and non-agression, hoping to forestall further devastation going forward.
Government
The government of the Coast is divided into four branches, Executive, Administrative, Parliamentary, and Magisterial.
- Executive handles implementation of laws, and is elected by Coast citizens.
- Administrative handles oversight and enactment of legislation, and are hired meritocratically by the Executive division.
- Parliamentary handles drafting and passage of laws, and is elected by citizens.
- Arbitration handles matters of legal disputes and are appointed by the Executive division.
Executive Division
The national Executive division is composed of thousands of people, but contains only one elected position: the president. The president of Emberwood Coast serves 6 year terms, but can be removed from office by a vote of no-confidence after a petition by citizens of Emberwood Coast. The official term limit is 3, but no president has served more than 12 years. Early news reports indicate Nimona Poole will, however, run for re-election in 2018.
The vice president of Emberwood Coast is the candidate with the second most votes in the general election. Leelah Stone, a staunch environmentalist, currently holds the position.

Elections are totally electronic, and carried out on a subnet mask to prevent tampering. Votes can be counted immediately, and turnout is close to 85%. The process itself works on a process of a Single Transferable Vote, one used widely in other progressive nations.
Arbitration Division
The court is organized into four levels.
High Elegentae | Handles matters of legislative ethics and government power. Decisions are absolute. |
Low Elegentae | Handles matters of high-profile individual rights or punishment in felony cases. |
Capitol Court | Handles matters of contest on local decisions over felonies. |
Local Court | Handles all judicial matters initially. Contested decisions are passed upwards. |
Current High Elegentae Judges
The following list is of currently serving judges on the High Elegentae Council.
Since the Arbitration's organization in 1972 there have always been 7 high arbiters.
All High Arbiters are appointed by the President and ratified through the Free Assembly.

Military Forces
Main article: Emberwood Coast Military
Emberwood Coast's military is extremely technologically advanced, taking scientific ideas from the ECSEA and other research organizations to increase the power of the otherwise small fighting force. The combined forces of all four branches are quite capable of defending the Coast, however, most operations are in defense of allied nations on foreign battlefields.
The Armed Forces are comprised of four sections:
- The Emberwood Coast Command Agency coordinates the Coast's strategic and intelligence assets, as well as any weapons of mass destruction.
- The Emberwood Coast Terrestrial Armed Forces, or Army for short. It handles all the ground fighting.
- The Emberwood Coast Naval Forces, or Navy. It is comprised of the Navy's fighting ships, as well as the Coast Service.
- The Emberwood Coast Aerospace Forces, or Air Force. It is in charge of all the Armed Forces' flying vehicles, both in atmosphere and in space although, as of yet, space includes only the Orbital Anti-Ballistics System: a total of three unmanned satellites.
Population
The urban areas of the nation are very developed, and awash with technological wonders and ingenious solutions to the massive influx of residents.
Urban Centers
Aura
Main article: Capitol city of Aura
Aura, the capital of Emberwood Coast, is home to 80% of the national population. It is by far the densest population center in the area.
It is home to the nation's Administration Center, as well as the Arbiter Council and the Free Assembly Center.
Right in the center of the city is Liara Bay, the nation's primary maritime transport center. The largest harbor in the nation, it is home to embassies of any nation the Coast has relations with, and the Executive Administration Building. Its famous Seaside Street has several open plots still open for foreign buildings. It houses the UNAC Assembly Center as well, and has hosted international talks there since 1976 SD. A bronze statue of Chance Syng, the first President of the Coast, stands strong beside other nation's heroes over the plaza of the Assembly Center, surrounded by all the flags of member nations of the assembly.
The bay is across from Altis Island, host to Stonewall Point, the ECSEA's primary launch facility.
Northern Aura is a less densely populated area of the city and favored home of many diplomats.
Portside
Portside features the majority of Emberwood's maritime establishments. While Aura has more coastline, the capital has stricter regulations on seaside development. Therefore, Portside actually has more ports, harbors, and drydocks. It also has more industry, and more commercial warehouses. Agricultural shipments coming in from the greenhouses and farms around Myriad and to the east of Portside.
The downtown area is also much less developed than Aura (Owing in part to the fact that it has only a tenth of the residents). It is frequented by naturalists and tourists.
Rockport
The northernmost municipality in the Coast, Rockport is the home of more than five hundred thousand people. It is quaint, compared to Aura and Portside. Independent retail stores are very common, as are family-owned restaurants.
Rockport is the military headquarters of the Coast. It sports the Rockport Naval Base, as well as North Coast International Airport.
Additionally, the city is just West of the Border with Axdel, making it a hotspot for overland trade, with several warehouses, depots, and rail stations. Over a dozen mag-lev stations connect Rockport to the Axdelian Border. The city also has the nation's highest building, not to be confused with the Tallest Building. The nation's tallest structure is located in Aura, and is shorter by ten meters because of the natural elevation of the northern part of the country.
Notable Persons
Corporal Marie Robinson is a decorated pilot for the Extra-atmospheric division of the Aerospace Forces
Chance Syng was the first president of Emberwood Coast, who presided over the nation for ten years. They stepped down after taking responsibility for an intelligence disaster in Norograd
Kayla Hansleigh is a noted astrophysicist and Noble Prize Laureate, and served as the president of the Coast from 1982 to 1994
Darson Nanokono was the president of the Coast from 1994-2006
Caroline Dean is the nation's current Secretary of Foreign Affairs
Nimona Poole is the President of Emberwood Coast and an ardent activist for sentient rights
Coraline Poole is the first lady of Emberwood Coast
Industry
The strongest industry within Emberwood is Information Technology. Retail goods are, for the most part, imported, as are certain non-staple foods.
Information Technology
One of three major internet hubs for Aurora are located in Portside, and an offsite server center stores a copy of the entire (public) internet within a small, unassuming two story structure outside Aura.
Agriculture
Also major industries are Agriculture and Precision Engineering. Genetically modified crops are cultivated which can feed the entire country three times over.
Manufacturing
Several factories within the city use precision lasers and nanotechnology to create computers, microstructures, and other small pieces of machinery.
Demographics
Religion
Freedom of Religion is key to the Emberwood Coast. Anyone within the borders of the nation is permitted to perform any non-endangering ritual at any time of their choosing.
The only limits placed on this are: |
---|
1. The action may not take life, health, or property from any sentient beings |
2. The action may not obstruct the normal operation of daily life for others |
3. The action may not include threats directed at other sentient beings |
Species
Any and all species are welcomed into Emberwood Coast. To date, over 30 biologically distinct species of sentient beings reside in the nation.
Including, but not limited to:
Species Name | Est. Percent |
---|---|
Human | 34.26% |
Vulpine | 25.52% |
Lupine | 17.87% |
Feline | 14.48% |
Avian | 3.14% |
Reptilian | 2.76% |
Other | 1.36% |
LGBT Rights
Emberwood Coast is a bastion of civil rights and is well known for it's welcoming of all people of all identities.
Pride parades and other celebrations are thrown annually with great fervor, most of which take place in Aura.
Geography
The coasts of the nation are green, much as they once were, and teeming with life, one such species lending their likeness to the nation's animal, the fox. The entire nation, and it's claimed seas, span only a few thousand square kilometres. To the north there is the Gradean Sea, and to the South and West, the larger nations of Axdel and Quartz Fern Coast hold strong. Due to its proximity to the sea, the nation's tallest natural point is a small chalky mesa, near the northern border, which reaches only about 298 meters at its peak.
The nation's cities are extremely dense, containing 90% of the population in less than 30% of the land. The majority live in the capital, Aura, while other dense centers exist on the mainland coast.
Despite the high urbanization, the nation has (relatively) vast swaths of protected forests throughout.

To the south and extending across the more southern nation of Quartz Fern Coast extend Fagaceae Autumnus forests, notable for their perpetual fall colors. A mutation in the chlorophyll of the leaves and geographic separation created the species, colloquially known as fireleaf or forever-fall to Emberitians. Most notable of these nicknames is Emberwood, which gave its name to the nation. Fagaceae Autumnus is Emberwood Coast's national flora.

Technology
Currency
Emberitian currency is 100% paper free. Kiribs are stored on devices called "Tabs" or are accessible by most mobile devices. Tabs are kept on one's person, and are triggered to complete a sale.
Any international electronic currency is also accepted, and can easily be exchanged, in most cases.
Transportation
The public transportation system is highly advanced, employing raised magnetic rail systems, electric cars, and a subterranean metrorail network in major metropolitan areas. Most non-electric vehicles are from foreign visitors and tourists. Both major Coast airlines use solar or hydrogen battery vehicles.
