Football is the most popular sport in Kernansquillec and source of great national pride. The Kernansquillecan Football Association (KERFA) is the country's national governing body, with the KERFA responsable for both the national teams and domestic football. It a member of the World Cup Committee (WWC) and of the Union of International Club Associations (UICA).
While football in Kernansquillec, including organised club football with international participation, modern-day club football in Kernansquillec only began in 2056 following the Great War period.
The First Division, Second Division and Third Division are the three tiers of professional club football in Kernansquillec. All 64 clubs also participate in the annual National Cup. The KERFA's UICA membership also allows club teams to qualify for international club tournaments such as the Champions' Cup, the Globe Cup, the Series B Champions’ Cup, the Cygnus Cup and the Copa Campeones. Youth teams may also qualify for the Youth Cup.
The national team also participate regularly in international tournaments, namely at the World Cup and the Copa Rushmori. The team have qualified for the World Cup on three occasions (World Cup 57, 73, 74), but their greatest hour came in Copa Rushmori 21 when the team finished as runners-up.
The KERFA
The Kernansquillecan Football Association (KERFA) is the governing body of all football related activities in Kernansquillec.The KERFA runs both the National Team as well as Kernansquillec's domestic football, namely with it's three professional leagues: the First Division, the Second Division and the Third Division.
The KERFA is a member of the Union of International Club Associations (international club football) and of the World Cup Committee (international football).
History
Founded decades before the start of the Great War in 1995, the KERFA has been the driving force behind professional football in Kernansquillec. Two years after it was founded, a team was sent to the 42nd Baptism of Fire and the international side has since been growing in stature, qualifying for World Cup 57.
Domestic football has also been a priority for the KERFA, though it has been less of a success until recent times. Records before the Great War were destroyed and little in known about previous championships. But the launch of a new professional footballing pyramid in 2056 has proved to be a success.
The KERFA is also in charge of all things to do with the national team and its development sides, namely naming the manager. The KERFA is also in charge of relations with the WCC.
The National Stadium, which hosts international matches, as other domestic matches such as the National Cup final and the playoff final, is the property of the KERFA.
Rules and regulations
The Kernansquillecan Football Association is the supreme governing body of the sport of professional, semi-professional and amateur football in Kernansquillec.
The organisation of the footballing pyramid is down to the discretion of the KERFA. The three professional leagues at the moment are the First, Second and Third Divisions. The rules regarding promotion and relegation depend on the leagues.
One common factor with all leagues is the tiebreakers: teams are ranked based on their total number of points. If points are level the following tie-breakers are used: goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head away goals, one match play-off (only if qualification for a UICA competition or relegation is at stake).
Under the currant UICA regulations and KERFA's ranking, the First Division champions qualify for the Champions' Cup, as well as the Copa de Campeones. The runners-up also qualify for the Champions' Cup. Teams ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th make the Globe Cup. The National Cup winners qualify for the Cygnus Cup. The top four sides in the Second Division qualify for the Series B Champions’ Cup.
Squad numbers, stadia and match day procedures are all regulated by the KERFA, in coordination with other bodies that may be involved.
The KERFA has full rights over TV and radio broadcasting and it is down to the association to distribute the rights and any revenue they may create.
Presidency
The Kernansquillecan Football Association is led by a President who is elected for a 5 year term by the chairmen of the professional clubs of Kernansquillec and the currant manager of the national side.The President is at the heart of changes to the game as he must submit proposals to be voted on by clubs. He also serves an ambassadorial role for the game.
No President may serve more than a single mandate and must not have any financial interests in clubs or companies who have ties with football.
The current president, Estavan Klasson, replaced former President Natasha Mikhailov in 2065 and will serve in her post until 2070.

History
The First Division is the first fully professional football league in Kernansquillec. While numerous attempts had been made before for a national championship, including some that opened up qualification to UICA competitions, all folded after just a couple of seasons.
The Kernansquillecan Football Association (KERFA) made the decision to found the First and Second Divisions in 2056 as they looked to help develop the national team. In 2063-64 the league was expanded from 10 teams to 20 teams.
So far the First Division has taken place over 12 full seasons, with the first matches taking place at the end of August and the last ones by the end of May. The 13th, 2068-69 season is set to get underway soon.

The Third Division is the third highest league in the Kernansquillecan pyramid of football. 24 teams play each other twice over a season with the team finishing top of the table winning promotion, along with the teams that finish second and third. There are replaced by the three teams to be relegated from the Second Division.
The team who finish bottom of the Third Division win the famed "Cuillère en bois", a 2.5 meter long wooden spoon. Before the 2059-60 season, the Cuillère was awarded to the team that finished bottom of the Second Division.
The division was first formed in 2059-60 and has existed in different formats since, except for the 2063-64 season when Kernansquillec's pyramid system adapted to welcome additional professional clubs.
