The Royal Order of Amalia was founded in 1830 by King George I, upon the insistence of his wife, Queen Amalia, who wanted to create an order to reward noble women who served the Crown. Although the King remains as Sovereign of the Order, the statutes dictate that the Queen consort would be the Grand Mistress and that she would decide all appointments.

The Order is limited to thirty members, without including princesses of the Royal House. Members of the Order must lead a virtuous life in the exercise of religion and works of charity.
